Name: Candace & Tal
Location: Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, NY
Why I use color:
"I chose color based upon mood. This apartment is our first home and while I wanted it to feel grown up I also wanted it to be whimsical and homey. We live in a moderate sized loft, so the colors help define and link various "rooms". The palette, browns, greens and blues are from nature and make me feel calm while the patterns create movement and interest."
Color Tips:
"I have an emotional reaction to color, and I think finding and using colors that feel good is the key. People think that dark colors make small spaces feel smaller, but our use of dark brown actually makes the space warm and cozy, especially a modernist loft space. Color can create a sense of continuity or seperation for example in a loft using similar colors creates flow, whereas dissimilar colors can define spaces."
Color Resources:
"For inspiration I look to designsponge's blog, in addition to shopping stores in brooklyn that carry great stuff like "Zipper" and "Living" in Carroll Gardens."

In spite of white walls, this room does still manage to be a color story. I think one of the reasons that works is because of the white chairs, and white in the art, both of which make the wall color an intentional choice rather than a default mode...
Love how the grid of the armoire relates to the grid of the (Angela Adams?) rug... and how the modern botanical of the pillows talks to the pattern in the curtains.
hmm, i voted for this one as an instant finalist because I thought the walls were a pale pale lavender...
Then patrick (the other one) said they were white. am i blind? if they are white then i would demote them to red ribbon status.
I do LOVE LOVE this aparment-- they have an incredible eye for furnishings, but this contest to me seems to be about really committing to color... I guess that's just me though judging from what entries are doing well.
lilywould, it is about committing to color. to me, that rug is more of a commitment than a coat of paint.
Thanks for your comments Lily and Patrick!
The walls are actually pale grey but read white in sunlight. The lavender may have been a color cast on the photos from the not so fab digicam.
And yes Patrick, that is the Munjoy Angela Adams rug.

I adore this space. The colors work together so well, but it doesn't feel overdone or like living in a catalog. With the rug as such a strong focal point, I like how the other pieces are subtle but hold the room together. The pictures over the couch are gorgeous... where are they from?
Another thing to remember about the "white" gray walls and this contest in general. The colors we're seeing on our RGB computer screens (or LCDs for you lucky people) are not always an accurate representation of what they look like in real life.
Aquarabbit-
the 3 posters flower, tree and yellow landscape were purchased in a hole in the wall framing store in south miami where my parents live. The one on the far right is a Britto, an artist from South Beach.

Please remember too that some people aren't allowed to paint their walls (in other words, ME), so I'd personally love to see more rooms where people have worked with apartment-issue cream/white or do alternatives. My white walls are a reason I'm hesitant to submit my room!
Anyway, back to the room....I like your use of different patterns and colors together...it's like you would think they shouldn't go together, but they do. I like it because it doesn't look so ultra-coordinated, matchy-matchy. Well done.
Candace--
The fact that the walls can look white, gray or even pale lilac (monitor issues notwithstanding, as jimkk points out) means, to me, you have picked an incredible color that holds a wide range of pigment deep down in it. So I think that scores you even more color points, cuz that ain't easy to find!
I also like that your Britto remains such a concentrated accent, and has not become the sole inspiration to the room's palette as I've seen (unsuccessfully) elsewhere.
In general, I think your art is of very nice caliber, especially considering its somewhat humble origins. Nobody would have known otherwise!
Where are your nice green pillows with the white foliage pattern on them from? Thanks. Nice place.
Edward, the pillows are West Elm. Thanks.
i think this apartment was superior in its coordination of all the elements, color, pattern, and texture. you took eclectic pieces in varying colors, put them together and it really worked. you have what looks like a large vase next to the armoire, an unexpected surprise using many colors. the color palatte is earthy, warm and inviting without looking contrived.
Call me a foodie, but I saw the comforting colors of fruits in this room. Tangelo, mulberry, avocado, olive, plum. Soft, rich and relaxing.
Thanks for sharing!

i know this is about color, but i have to ask...where's the sofa from? i love it. thanks.
I love just about every object in your house! Especially that rug and the amazing tree print. I do want to paint your walls though...I keep picturing pale blue or pale leafy green...
Thanks again for all your kind remarks everyone!
ben-the sofa is design within reach, I don't see it on their site anymore but if I remember correctly its called "Theo".Thanks!
wonderful. I also appreciate that this show of color doesn't involve color saturated walls; gives us renters who can't paint some ideas.
Would love to know where that tree print came from.
The use of color in this room is amazingly wonderful. It has subtlety and originality I could never come up with myself. And by the way, what is that armoire's story? It looks positively medieval, and I want it right now!

This place is great and one reason is that it's clean of clutter--at least for the photos. The photos are what "sell" the spaces. The owners probably leave the paper on the sofa, but I appreciate that they took the trouble to keep the photos clear.
Please, dish on the armoire.
Nice!
meg and aulaire-
Thanks! The armoire is made of the doors from an early 19th century Indian house and the frame was built around them. I loved it and knew it would add needed masculinity to the room.
c- the tree print is from a frame shop in South Miami.
Thanks Candace, if it isn't too much trouble, can you take a look and see if there is an artist or name of the print? I've searched all of my usual print suspects but can't find it. I must have this print ! :) Thank you.
c-
It's a litho or a screen print. It's signed but illegible. It says it's 96/100.
Wish I could be a better help. It looks like the name starts with an F or a T...
awesome. Love it! you must have creative friends!-brooke
Thank for looking, appreciated. I can not stop looking at this space. I absolutely love it. Colorful but clean and fresh, fabulous, wish you would have won!
This is an older post so not sure if I will receive a response - but was wondering if you could tell me where you found those white leather chairs. I love their size and they work perfectly in a pair. That is my favorite Angela Adams rug and a lovely apartment all-around.
