I've Got Color! Contest: Faith's Singing Orange Symphony

fak01.jpg

Name: Faith
Location: NY, NY

Why I use color:

"It make me happy. Walking into a room drenched in color makes my heart sing. It's bold and joyous and just plain works. Color is also a symbol of independence -- I promised myself that when I got off the renting cycle and actually bought my own place, NO MORE WHITE WALLS."

fak02.jpg

Color Tips:

"1. One color, lots of shades.
2. Use your favorites.
3. Be bold!"

fak03.jpg

Color Resources:

"1. Fabrics provide great inspiration for color combos.
2. Collect samples of everything: paint chips, formica, fabric swatches."

During the day, that orange feels like it might be a bit much. But at night, after a few drinks from the AMAZING bar, I bet it feels just right. Where did you find that lovely corner bar?

The orange is crazy! It's excellent! Congrats for being so bold.

I smiled as soon as I saw this one. That's definitely a night-time room... but what a night!

Very bold and exciting, not subtle. I don't think I could live with that much excitement though. The TV and its cabinet seem somewhat out of place in this context. Do you have plans for them?

Holy cats! I love it! Deep orange, hot pink, and white - that is an unsung hero among color combinations. Normally I hate flat white, but this is just perfect. I don't think this is a dark horse at all - it's pure finalist material to my mind.

And those incredible, incredible lamps! I can only imagine how psyched you must have been when you found those. ...Plus now I have bar envy. Major bar envy. You are clearly a thrift shopper extraordinaire.

...The TV is a little nekkid, but it doesn't bother me much - I think setting it atop a nice piece of teak like that is about all you can do. Personally I'm not much for the "pretend we don't have a TV by putting it in an armoire" school (I think armoires are annoyingly unbalancing to a room, and I still mostly believe that they belong in the bedroom.) A lesser reader might have removed the TV for the pics - but kudos to you for showing us the real space.

Nice nice nice!

and one other thing - that is the ONLY use of those medusa lamps that I've ever truly adored! A+++!

wow, you do have color! and a pink flamingo! i agree with the others here that this must be a great room to have a cocktail party in. i'm just left wondering, what does the rest of your apartment look like?? i'm so curious now.

living in this would put me in a padded cell.
but if it makes you happy, de gustibus non est disputandum....

I like orange, but this is too much even for me.

Yowza! This is a room that John Waters could appreciate! I admire your commitment to the color orange and your moxie. Kudos!

Would have preferred if the walls and the great bar area did most of the talking -- for they speak well. Let the furniture bounce off of that, leaving them a little more neutral. I love the white left by the ceiling, though.

(Audible gasp.) Wow! I was grinning so widely as I scrolled down the pics. This space is awesome. Faith, you totally nailed the hipster Palms Springs Modern thing--in New York! Nice, nice, nice. I'm coming over with my cocktail shaker and Perez Prado and Yma Sumac CD's...

Clarification... I think I meant to say "Googie" instead of PS Modern.

My bar area is almost that exact shade of orange (I think at least, who knows what pictures and computer monitors do to it, it is at least close). I love that bar! I wish I had gotten my place together in time to submit pictures for this great contest, but I just moved in 2 weeks ago and it isn't near picture ready. Where did you get that bar though? Did you make it/have it made or did you find it somewhere? I live in Atlanta so a street address doesn't do me a whole lot of good, but it may help someone else or at least give me ideas.

And by the way, I completely agree, no more boring walls! In my apartments I haven't even had white walls, they've all been some sort of yucky yellowish tinted beige which made everything look dinghy. So, bravo on the orange. I'm also interested in what other colors you have in your place and how they might compare to what is in mine (I have many colors in my place but love how it is turning out).

This is so happy and fun and totally swanky. I don't really like orange, but I love this. And I bet it's fine in the daylight because of all the white. Congrats, Faith. :)

(If there's anything I don't really like, it's probably that little flower table. The room doesn't need the green. It's not bad in context, though.)

I think it would look wild in the daytime, in a good way; not just a night time place.

I love everything about this room. It is doing what it is doing very well-Googie I think someone said. I couldn't live with that much color in my tiny place even though I am very attracted to it. But I have one suggestion. Looks like the couch used to be white, but has an orange cover on part of it? It would pop more if it was white against all the orange, IMHO.

Now THIS is commitment to color! Way to go. So many great pieces in this room. I would have to edit it down a bit to be comfortable (Miranda, I agree with you about the little flower table) letting the color speak for itself, but I know how great it is to be surrounded by all the things you love. Truly a personal work of art.

BTW, can I buy that coffee table? It would go so well with in my apt. ;)

A room a UT fan would love. The plan and scheme were well thought out. The furniture, art and accessories fall into a common theme, the bar is FAB and the room exudes a positive energy. I truly don't understand the votes on this one. What's the difference between the commitment to color in this one and the other beautiful red (with the "Dark Mango" red) room on the entry list? Style may be different but no less contemplated and planned.
