I've Got Color! Final Smackdown Contestant #3:
Kate's Oasis of Color and Light

100_0978.jpg

Name: Kate
Location: San Francisco, CA

Bonus: Kate's original submission

Why I Should Be the Champ:

"Color is an integral part of my life. I rely on it to tell a story about the spaces I design. Color is expression. It provides meaning without words. This project embodies my philosophy. My space is very unique."

Picture-083.jpg

"It is the only bathroom, and it is the smallest space of the finalists. The lack of space, budget and light posed many challenges. I used color to open up the room. Beyond just paint, I layered color in the form of tile, glass, wood, and artwork. Without color this is a simple bathroom, with color it is a statement."

Whose Room I liked Besides My Own:

10-31-gari.jpg"The entry I liked the most was Garis Sexy Brown Bedroom. It speaks of sophistication. Garis choice of furniture and objects harmonize well with each other."

I love the detail in the floor tile it is a perfect match with the aqua walls. Where did you get it?

The painting fits the room like a glove. I love how the swirls complement the blue and turquoise in the room.

I am partial to Bay Area..., and I know the cramped bathrooms in SF. But, more so than the creative use of colors, somehow Kate's seem to lack a challenge and the boldness the other 3 had.

Nonetheless, the simplicity keeps it refreshing, This contest is about colors, but how would one dry their hands?

Kate's design reflects a clarity and lightness of being that permeates the room. Blue is a color of truth, spirituality, and direct communication. Kate has my vote! Her sense of color is very special! The room she designed "feels good".

All these rooms are nice. I like "kate's oasis" though because I know from redoing my own bathroom how hard it is to intstall tiles and fixtures let alone harmonize all these different elements. Kate your bathroom rocks! To me this is not just the most colorful entry but the one that posesses the most skill in designing.

Mike-Lack a challenge? If you read Kate's intial entry she carved out a space from her garage to add this bathroom and all on a very tight budget.
Do you know how hard a bathroom renovation is? Kate did more than just slap some paint on a wall or gather up a bunch of knicknacks and say look I have color, she used color in many different dimensions. This contest is all about the good use of color in design and not about who can combine the most colors in one space. Kate chose a multi tonal color approach to her room. It is just another way than say a multi hue color approach. Neither is better than the other, just different.

I agree this contest is not about the loudest color or most of amount of colors in a space. People should not knock Oasis of Color and Light because it uses a more tighter pallete.

ean--
The contest is also not about the difficulties of renovation.

Kate-you know I will vote for you but I was able to get my office place to vote too this morning. They liked your entry the most. Also somebody pointed out to me that your written words on Why I should win was most to the point. You were like one of the only ones who didn't beg for a vote because you wanted the furniture. I was thinking girl your too humble because although you have this bathroom done you have no furniture hardly in your house.

I want everyone to know Kate sold all her beloved mid century modern furniture to help start up her non profit business which helps low income families have well designed aesthetically beautiful places to live in. She sits on a futon mattress to watch tv and eats off tv tables! Ill stop now since I am probably embarrasing her.
Kate you go girl, you deserve all that is good for what you give back to this world :)

Laura, if the competition is not about who needs furniture most, then why plug Kate's needs? For all we know, everyone in this contest could be a saint, but that's not supposed to factor in.

At this point, I'm contemplating voting for the least annoying contestant. Sorry to be cranky.

To I know I know,

No you are right, I guess I cant help but feel protective over her when I see nasty comments about her design on various comment sections of this web site. People are entitled to their opinion but it just seems harsh at times. It seems almost clicky. As for the furniture thing I just got annoyed at people trying to explain why they are worthy of stuff from CB2 as a main element to why the deserve to win. Kate is just a really sweet humble person and I am the annoying big mouth. in the end please dont equate voting for Kate on my comment. She isn't the annoying one, just me :)

I think the negative comments towards Kate's entry have been quite limited. And she is certainly a frontrunner per the voting.

Where do you put your toothbrush? Where are the towels? Where is the function? Looks like someone missed the toilet and painted a picture.

Kate's design is sure to come out on top. With all the gorgeous color, light, and detail, it's just stellar. A bathroom is such an overlooked space in most people's homes, yet this one stands out as a great space with form and function. Good luck Kate! You deserve to take it home!

I'm not quite sure why there are several negative comments on this artist's work, or any negative comments at all for that matter. Kate of San Francisco has done a fantastic job in the "I've Got Color!" Contest. The cool blues and the warm woods work so well together, especially with all the accents.

This isn't the "I've got a toothbrush holder!" contest Tom. Really now. Contest entries should all be judged on how the designers worked color into their space, and Kate seems to have done a fabulous job.

I love this room. Good luck Kate. You've got my vote.

that is THE coolest sink ive ever seen. SO many good ideas here!

posted by erica. on 2005-11-01 23:47:21

The sink doesn't count. By definition, "clear" is not a color.

posted by Retort on 2005-11-02 01:12:08

The sink reflects color and light, which enhances the environment. Color does not have to be "owned" by an object. It can be shared.

posted by Sally on 2005-11-02 14:48:31

She is absolutely not needing votes at the moment, but seriously? There IS color in that clear sink. It appears to be a lovely blue-green tint. It does not just look clear. Most clear glass has a slight green tint and that has been employed very nicely here.

posted by Curtis on 2005-11-02 17:26:55

who cares about the sink, it looks like it was bought at the 99 cent store

What's priceless is Kate and how she put it all together! Congratualtions Kate!
