Flickr Finds: Ikea's Knappa Lamp

10.31.knappa.jpg

It really is all over the place. As an homage to the simply beautiful Knappa lamp from Ikea, we've posted this Flickr Slideshow...

From assembly to installation to hacking, everyone's photographing the Knappa lamp, which has been a hit ever since it was brought to Ikea by designers Brylle and Jacobsen. The polypropylene lamp sells for only $25, takes a little assembly patience (putting it together is actually kind of fun), and looks akin to Brylle and Jacobsen's much more expensive designs.

I liked the older version of it, it was bigger for the same price. I was really mad when they changed it, because I really wanted to buy another one.

Djlucky, it used to be BIGGER? Wow. I just put one together last weekend (easy once I figured it out, but overwhelming when first unpacked), and was shocked by the hugeness of the thing when I was done.

I concur with Djlucky...the older one was much better but I was very fortunate to pick it up when they put it on sale last spring. I have both hanging by my bookcase plus the small round one.

I also have the complete set of the Normann lamps (69, 06 s/m/l, 03).

It's so much fun putting those lamps together. As a kid, I used to get those little papercraft books where you can make little towns/circuses so it's always been in my blood.

I did find the ikea lamps tacky in a club and condo entrance setting--go for avocado pendants if you've got the money.

OK, I really like this lamp but i'm not sure if i want to get it. The problem is that i want to hang it in the middle of a room but i'm not sure how to hide the cord well. Does anyone have any suggestions?

If you're not too afraid to mess with two wires, you can simply change an existing overhead light with this bad boy (Which is what we did without any problems in less than 5 minutes), as far as concealing it, if you REALLY have to and don't already have the wiring ready, just make sure the cable's tight enough so that even though it shows it looks neatly installed, and an even easier approach, just guide it through the corner and hang it close-ish to the wall, since it actually looks nice enough for you to forget all about the wire.

My husband and I bought 2 of these lamps a few months ago. Watch out for the dust! ANY little bits of dust get in there and make dark spots that look awful - so theres quite a bit of upkeep with these - you gotta dust every part of it. But they do look great.

I'm guessing you could also conceal the cable, inside of a pipe or something mounted to the ceiling.

I attached mine to a ceiling fixture box (whatever it's called) but had it altered at a lighting place first. They supplied the round plate to cover the box and all the other bits to make it look finished. This was more expensive than I expected - it basically doubled the cost of the lamp - but I'm a nervous nelly when it comes to electricity.

We put this lamp in our kitchen and the cleaning of the dust (which may be harder for us as it's in the kitchen) makes me think it's just not worth it!

I've got one in my daughter's room. Just unscrew the electrical parts from the plastic structure and stick it in the shower. Voila! Dusted!
