Love the blue and green paint with the crisp white. What are those color names??

posted by kate d. on 2006-11-29 12:05:49

According to the comment from the owner on the photo, it's appletini by Behr.

posted by L on 2006-11-29 12:07:46

Oh and the blue is "tropical waters" by Behr

posted by L on 2006-11-29 12:09:43

Thanks L. People had asked for the colours on Flickr so I had posted them on there.
And thanks AT for posting my pics!

Amazing painting technique; just amazing.

One of my rooms is a similar (less saturated) color to the first pic and this makes me wonder how it would look if the smaller walls were the crisp white (essentially the opposite of what you have)?

Love your color choices (as seen in your color contest entry - you had my vote for finalist!!!) and your vignettes are very creative and artistic. Way to go!

My first thought: Wow! She has all those beautiful breakable objects with five cats?

Love the bright colors. I used to have that London Underground poster and I like the way you've worked it in with all the mid-Century stuff.

my heart actually pulsed with LUV when i first saw this pic. wow... WOW!

Iron Horse - I think you should try it. I love having only one wall (no matter the size) with a bold colour.
Yes, I have 5 cats, 2 of which are kittens. Makes for some good times. My floors are scratched to sh*t and i have to have rocks in all my plant pots. There are claw marks on my teak buffet.... but I love the monsters so I cry a couple of tears and move on.

One of my favourites from the Colour Contest... a finalist, in fact.
Absolutely stunning! So, I am so happy to see your home showcased on AT via flickr.
Home sweet home indeed!

impressive, especially how the displays have many objects which work together as a group rather than seeming crowded.

i do think that gorgeous (banana?) plant deserves better than the white plastic plant pot.

posted by rasil on 2006-11-29 12:59:26

Thanks everyone! Rasil - if I could find a better plant pot here than that Ikea one (I have 4 of them...BORING) I would. My selection is limited to basically Home Depot and Ikea (I'm in Ottawa which equates to crappy shopping).

posted by kiminottawa on 2006-11-29 13:07:12

Can't you paint the pot? Or sort of build a faux etagere around it?

Sure, rocks in the pots, but what about kittyproofing the other stuff, the glassware, the candles, everything else? Do you use Museum Putty?

posted by Jean on 2006-11-29 15:36:26

I didn't think the pots looked that bad so I never thought about painting or disguising them. You guys are making me have second thoughts now.

The shelves over my desk the kittens can't reach and they've never tried climbing on the ones over the TV. I keep a spray bottle handy so they get a soakin' if they try getting into anything. They HATE that.

If you're in Ottawa with a car, you should take a weekend trip to Montreal as there are a plethora of wonderful stores here.

posted by Allison on 2006-11-29 16:25:46

Allison...WHERE ARE THESE STORES?? I have no idea where to get anything besides clothing on St.Catherine's.

Hey Kim,

Angie here from Montreal, I posted on your space last time, I'm the girl with the boutique/gallery here in Montreal. I just wanted to let you know that the affordable art show we're throwing that you were interested in starts this Saturday. We're having a big "to do" to celebrate from 6-midnight. All the art is $100 or less, so perfect for filling that space above your couch. Our address is 1649 Amherst, here's our site if you want to contact me: www.HQgalerieboutique.com

I could also give you some shopping tips for Mtl. First stop for home stuff: St. Denis street, SOOOO many homewares shops. And for a drool inducing shopping trip, St. Laurent just below Mont-Royal. Oh and of course, if you're looking for midcentury stuff, the street that my shop/gallery is on (Amherst) is THE place for furniture and accessories. There are at least 10 great shops, and the prices are pretty reasonable. There was a really big surge of great design here in '67 when we hosted the World Expo, so TONS of great design was made locally, and also brought in from around the world.

OK enough history, back to AT.

Angie, THANKS SO MUCH. I think I may have to rent a UHaul cause my Jetta will only fit so much. Gonna talk the boyfriend into a trip to Montreal this weekend FOR SURE. Wish it wasn't so close to Christmas...I'm supposed to shop for OTHER PEOPLE!

posted by kiminottawa on 2006-11-29 17:00:53

I LOVE your place and the bold use of colours
And acatauly I like the plastic pot ( It looks simplistic and flows in with the rest of the white in the room.

Only one thing that bothers me - sorry for asking
but in the first pic, the landscape pic on the wall
why is it so low hiding behind the lamp and vase?

posted by Bottonz on 2006-11-29 21:05:41

No problem Kim,glad to help. That would be great if you could make it out for the opening night on Sat., but if not, the exhibition is on all month. It's funny you say you're "supposed to shop for OTHER PEOPLE", we get soooo many people saying the same thing in the store, often people are saying it AS they purchase something for a friend then keep it for themselves!!

The colors should go into the "color vault" - they are great colors. And while I'm at it, can someone add some oranges to the valut as well? I want to paint some orange in my kitchen and would love to see some samples.

posted by Clea on 2006-11-30 11:03:13

Clea - All the colors I used are in the color vault - including the orange I used in my hallway.

Bottonz - I put the picture low because I like pictures hung low when they're over furniture. That wall was eventually going to be filled with pictures too.

posted by kiminottawa on 2006-11-30 11:19:46

Oh the hanging it low didn't bother me at all
the fact that it is behind the lamp and vase bother me.

Sorry just my opinion. I like picture very visible

but I do still LOVE LOVE LOVE your place

Honestly that white plastic pot reads "clean, crisp, graphic white" much more than it does "cheap plastic," so I'd rather you just leave it how it is.

And that landscape in question, is that a paint-by-number? It looks great!

I really don't see anything I'd move at all. It's gorgeous, yet homey. The color (especially that teal in the dining room) are delicious.

I just can't stop looking at and enjoying the relationship between the blades of your fan collection and that art piece two shelves below it. Seriously. This is so nice.

posted by Curtis on 2006-11-30 15:13:30

That landscape is a paint-by-numbers i did (and won't ever do again). The art two shelves below the fan i painted - ( saw a lampshade with that design and copied it. Thanks for the compliments.

posted by kiminottawa on 2006-11-30 16:17:06

so i absolutely love that red rug in the living room. it compliments all the colors perfectly. perhaps you should put it back and give your sister the beautiful brown one that is now in its place.

posted by jen on 2006-11-30 18:34:50

hehehe...nice try jen!

maybe both of you should have been more on the ball and got to them first. HA! Ya snooze ya lose SISTAHS.

Look at that...we have a comedian in the family!!! Actually I did get a beautiful (and huge)teak sideboard and really funky lamps so HA! :)

Kim,

Don't listen. The pots are perfect! Rasil is just trying to sell you something. Plants are an art form in and of themselves and the pot should not compete with them. You have done justice to that plant. Also, I really love the size of the plant, prefering that to the cluttery look of a lot of little plants.

Your simple choice is perfect, especially since you have many other wonderful art objects, any more and it might go over the top rather than the cool clean balance you have achieved.

Form is a wonderful thing, and sometimes the mundane is beautiful just because it is functional. For example, your collection of fans. They are a functional item that also happen to be cute, so see you have a repetitive them going on here.

You have pulled off a wonderful balance here, so keep those pots and don't paint them or do any of that frou-frou stuff to them. Let them be simple and rejoice in that. Sorry, I'll get off my soap box now.

I really love your place. I remember it from the Color Contest and voted insta-finalist for you. The dining room is amazing the way you have blocked color.

posted by peggy on 2006-12-20 15:35:14

I'd assumed the white pot was a Design Statement and still think so, despite the dispute.

You have quirky stuff, and you have a lot of white to balance it. Therefore it's logical and consistent to stick with a sleek white pot until and unless you come across something stunningly quirky that justifies repotting a large plant.

All the work I've done and everybody mentions the damn ikea pot. LOL. I'm keeping the pot as is. I have other more important things to worry about, like what to do with my god-awful fireplace, getting rid of linoleum in bthrms, the horrid oak kitchen etc. etc. Peggy, thanks for all the kind words.
