Although the occupants of this house probably have a few more resources than the rest of us, their understated style is a wonderful lesson on greening our blocks that can benefit us all: if nothing else, find one good thing and stick with it.

The stoop of this townhouse is about the size of my apartment, and yet they have planted just one, beautiful pot of philodendron and kept it immaculate. For this, I award them this week's Flower Box Award.

This week, why don't we all plant one good thing? If you don't have a 200 square-foot stoop, what about inside on your own humble windowsill? It is time to bring the outdoors in. If you can't care for a flock of philodendron, what about a small fern or a jade? Every long journey begins with one small plant. skgr
