Flower Box Awards: 74 Grand Street

2004_12_3_flowerbox 12-3-04 b.jpg

Only flowers survive. Last September, heavy rains washed out so much of the dirt from the lot next to this building that it shifted considerably, was evacuated, and may have to be demolished.

Despite it having been vacant for three months, and despite the fact that it is December and evening temperatures have been low, there are flowers blooming on the second floor fire escape. Geraniums!

Marvellous! Miraculous, actually. These pink and red blooms, untouched, it would seem, by human hands, are a startling symbol of hope. In this case, there's really no one to thank, but the plants themselves. SKGR

(Due to technical difficulties we are unable to show the pics we took yesterday, but found this one from September, which shows the same flowers blooming up above!)
