Flowerbox Award: 150 East 78th Street

Most improved. This little four-family townhouse on 78th Street has been crying out for some plant-life for years. The front of the building was all concrete and metal bars until a new owner in the building decided to enlist the help of a friend to plan a front garden.

Custom boxes were built by a skilled Japanese carpenter, soil was delivered and a few of the neighbors, went up to Dmitri's Garden Center on Second Avenue (103rd) with the friend/gardener and picked out a variety of part-sun loving plants: boxwood, creeping phlox and heliotrope.

A few hours later - this lush garden was planted. As it was being planted several people walked by and commented on the improvement. The owners were so proud! (If only we had a before photo.) skgr

This is my favorite part of the morning...walking cross-town on E. 78th looking at the beautiful flowers, blossoming trees and looking in the the windows of those yummy townhouses.
