Grow Light Special. St. Mark's Place is not my favorite street in New York. We have enough tattoo parlors and head shops along Sixth Avenue over in our neck of the woods thank-you-very-much.
It's easy to forget that even New York's dingiest, ugliest, stinkiest streets have some beautiful things happening. Streets are constantly changing.
And growing: this month, a windowsill and fire escape* gardener on St. Mark's is doing quite well transforming their windows onto St. Mark's into a green haven... and not without the help of grow lights, mind you. skgr
* For those of you who have expressed concern about some of our award winners blocking fire escapes with their plants, rest assured that t his winner has very carefully arranged their pots and boxes so that they do not block any egress from the building.
Wow! This fire escape is beautiful. This question may have already been asked, but did the owner of this apartment have to get the Fire Department to vet her arrangement?
On another note, thanks for having the contest. It was so inspired that I went out and got a flowerbox of my own--ivy only, so that it will do well in the winter as well, and the plant shop made it so that it has plant material on both sides (street and apartment) of the trellis that supports the ivy.
The weather being so hot, I haven't yet installed it; perhaps today is the day. Exciting stuff!
the fire dept. doesn't "vet" violations. that charming little configuration is really dangerous, but the 80 year old lady above has probably already been evicted and the art directors/designers/media folk who moved in are probably strong enough to jump.
Your fire escape is beautiful! Well planned, colorful, and well cared for. Nice to look up and see something so pretty.
