Good Questions: Extra Long Shower Curtain?

1-13-curtain.jpgHello AT,

I'm trying to find an extra long shower curtain -- 72x80 or so.

Are there any stores that do special orders or keep extra long shower curtains in stock?

Thanks, Nina

Indeed, Nina, the standard length is 72", and although liners come in extra long, it is hard to find longer curtains. We have no silver bullet, but we do have this link:

Natural Cotton Stripe Extra Long Fabric Shower Curtain

If you don't find what you want, you could also consider lowering the curtain from the rod by using two curtain hooks instead of one or using that supple metal chain (used to hold dog-tags) to hang from the curtain hook.

Anyone Else??

Every hardware store has that kind of chain, by the way, but I KNOW that I've seen it, and several other kinds of chain at Straight H on 9th Avenue and 45th or so, and also in Chelsea on 8th Avenue at about 20th Street or so. Also, I think Aquarius Hardware on Amsterdam in the low-90's.

For my last house, I needed to find an extra long shower curtain. I found a website that sold European shower curtains and bought one that worked out perfectly. Don't recall the URL though, sorry.

Ikea - their standard is 71" x 79"
with those ball chain hangers, you're all set

I'll post a picture in the flkr bar if I have time

My stepmother has actually made her own shower curtains (or, in more recent years, had them made) - it's quite simple - top and bottom seams and buttonholes along the top.

She always did it because she would fall in love with unusual fabrics that she preferred to "standard" curtains.

I have always made my own shower curtains. As a matter of fact I have to make one for my mother's birthday. The thing is that most fabrics come in 50-55" wide. So I have either seamed the curtain to get the 72" width or used non-directional fabric, turn it so the width is 72" and then add a complimentary fabric along the bottom. RH is showing that style:

So that's what I'm going to do with my mother's shower curtain. I can't find extra wide fabric I like.

The liners are easy to find:

(also in URL)

And if yo want cute fabric, it's pretty easy to whip something up.

I suggest you make your own and add clip hooks to the top, no keyholes needed. It's an easy project. If you don't sew, check out your local craigslist and hire a student or seamstress off of there. I hired a seamstress from craigslist in Boston and she did a lovely job on some valances for a client of mine, and the price was very affordable.
Good luck!!!

If you want to find some window hardware likes curtain rod , what is your favorite store ?
Does anybody like to buy curtain rods in the Target? I visited Target's website and found some new curtain rod which are designed by Thomas O'brien. These products look good for me.
How do you feel about these products?

I'd say Ikea, the size is right, and the quality of the two curtains I have hanging currently is good. They look good/hang very nicely.

Okay here is one of my biggest design secrets when it comes to shower curtains. Buy yourself a liner in the size you need, then purchase a tension rod in whatever finish matches you decor. Then find 2 standard rod pocket curtain panels, preferably 52x84 each (you will definitely have a better selection with this option). You will need to hang the rod higher than a standard rod, but this will also add lots of drama to the bathroom. I like to treat the shower as if it were a window, decor wise.

I bought an extra long plastic shower curtain liner at Bed, Bath and Beyond which I put inside the tub. Then I hung a regular size shower curtain, also puchased a BBB, on the outside. So that's two curtains on the same curtain rings.

Don't know if that helps, but it works for me.

Bed Bath and Beyond sells a "Hotel" brand curtain which is in plain colored fabric, and is at least 82"

Few people bought window curtains since they come in longer length to be used as the outside shower curtain. Just be sure you get ones that are machine washable and have an extra long liner inside. That is what I am doing.

Though this post is 2 years old it has been very helpful in my recent quest for an extra long shower curtain. But I need help with one issue that has not been explained here.

I think I am going to go with purchasing pre-made curtain panels but here is my dilemma:

How do you hang your grommet/buttonhole shower curtain liner with a Rod Pocket Curtain without resorting to two shower curtain rods?
