Okay, this may be the hot news in Red Hook these days. But a short walk to Fairway over the weekend revealed that the neighborhood's also blessed with more than a few beautiful community gardens...

It seemed every turn led us to a new garden, busy with neighbors hanging out and vegetable plants growing. We caught a smell of tomato plants as we passed by one garden and noticed a brick walkway in another. The gardens (Human Compass, The Amazing Garden, Backyard Garden, and Summit Garden) are open to the public and maintained by community volunteers through an organization called Green Thumb.
In total, we passed four gardens on our short walk down Columbia and Van Brunt. When we arrived at Fairway we noticed the leeks and cabbage are locally grown and, for a moment, we wondered...
