Henry Dean Glassware

11-29-dean2.jpgEntertaining with glassware. We recently stopped by Ochre looking for center candle holders for a client's dining table and really liked the ones above by Henry Dean (thick white glass on a black table). His name rang a bell, so we did some digging and found a large and beautiful range of glassware from this elder Belgian designer...

His personal story is funny, touching and unique:

After a broken off medicines study and a small sidestep into the pharmaceutical industry at the end of the fifties, Henri Doyen (Henry Dean’s given name) started up his own company fabricating plastic flowers for funeral wreaths. He even thought about expanding into coffins and even a crematorium until he realized that this was not what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. Until today he can not even look at another plastic flower!... more

There are several other stores that sell Henry Dean products. I got some of his candle holders at Nicole Farhi on 60th Street. (They're simple and not-too-precious-looking and very nice.) She also had lots of his thin drinking glasses, I think.
