Good Questions: Good Woven Wool Rug Source?

5-11-woolrug.jpgHello AT,

I have been looking all over New York City and the Web to find a source for natural wool woven rigs, like the one shown in the attached photos. I think that it would look great with my mid-century modern living room furniture. And wool rugs are supposed to stain resistant, hypoallergenic, and durable.

Please let me know if you know of any sources of such rugs.

Thanks, Todd

Dear Todd,

We really like these as well. Crate and Barrel is always our first stop for affordable natural rugs and they might have one. There's two that we know they DO have - Pebbles and Celeste - which are more in the shag direction, but wool and nice.

We'd also go to ABC Carpet and see if you can find a good deal on anything there. They have a remnant and reduced price section in their basement which can very good.

We would also check out Sisalcarpets.com for a wool sisal that might be close to what you have in the photo.

Anyone else??

We recently picked up an 8 x 10, deep burgundy rug for $300 from this site (on sale). Shipping was free, I think, and the price was a fraction of what it would have cost at ABC (we looked).

There's this similar wool rug from Ikea.

ABC definitely has flat weave wool rugs, and are not terribly expensive (by ABC Carpet standards).

Viva Terra (ctalaog and online) has a great wool rug right now... it's not a flat weave, more nubby. It is undyed wool from both black and white sheep, so it has a great black and white look.

Try also Pier 1.

You photo looks like a berber style woven rug or carpet. You might want to look at a carpet store. They can bind the edges of the carpet making it into a rug.

Does it have to be that same look?

All hand made Oriental/Persian rugs are made from all natural wool/cotton. Some of the best ones even use dyes made from vegetable sources.

Of course they're not as plain as that one.

One exception is Gabbeh rugs. Not the imitation Gabbeh rugs from India, Afghanistan & Pakistan , but the real Persian ones. Gabbeh rugs have little to no pattern to them so if you want something plain, simple, you might like a Gabbeh rug. Most of those use all natural dyes.

A real handmade Gabbeh isn't cheap like some of the ones mentioned, but it will last forever, or until you're tired of it and you can get a good portion of your money back if you sell it down the road, as opposed to a cheap factory rug.

By the way, in Farsi (main language of Iran (used to be Persia)), the word "gabbeh" means : something raw or natural, uncut or "in the rough".

So this would be a perfect match for you.

Also they're made using Turkish knots so they're very strong and durable.

For example, this is a plain/simple well made Gabbeh :

You can find others here, albeit at a higher price

i bought that Ikea rug that Arza posted and its actually very nice. its really soft and tightly knit and it seemed like it would be easy to clean and last a long time. unfortunately, it was a bit too small for my living room and i took it back.

i also picked up the Ikea LYNGBY rug, and i love it. 7x10 (doesn't seem to be available now) on sale for $90.

i can't speak for all wool rugs, but regarding stain-resistance... we recently spilled Izze pomegranate drink, and it just beaded up on top of the rug, and was easily soaked up without staining at all.

I also recently bought the Ikea Lyngby rug for about $109 for the 7 x 10. We like it a lot. I don't know why it was marked down so much, but it was a great buy.

Thank you everyone. I just picked up the Lyngby rug for $119 at Ikea. Almost exactly what I was looking for and for that price you can't go wrong.

Thanks again,
Todd
