Hello AT,
I have been looking for a dining table to go with these chairs I bought at Target. I wanted to pair them with something unexpected and unique so the dining room wouldn't look like it came straight from Target. However, I am just not bold enough, and I am tempted to just buy a dark, modern table table that matches. Can anyone tell me what they would put with these chairs?
Thanks! Negar

Lovely chair.
Round and white with clean lines will provide contrast without jarring.

I agree with Alana. I like the thought of a white table with those chairs. Contrast is a good thing. Dark rattan round placemats would be pretty on the white table too.

I did a quick google image search: something like this round one (top right) in white, not wood, not glass:

That chair is very similar to the classic Kyoto chair on the DWR website (www.dwr.com); you can click on that and see what they have it paired with to get some ideas. If Target is knocking off the Kyoto chair they might also knock off a good companion table.

White immediately came to my mind too. In almost any style.

How about this oval table: I am a big fan of curves when the seatback is so angular. http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=881&f=13414
Although I think that a white top would be a great idea

What about looking for a pedestal table on CL and then painting it an unexpected color, like aqua? That would be unique and anti-cookie cutter.

i tried looking at dwr also because the chairs look similar to the kyoto, but there wasn't much to look at...
domino magazine had a great section on mix & match dining that might help inspire:

heres a little drama. Plus a nice differentiation from the wood of the chair but still matching the color:

I second a vote for white, but would also be sure to recommend having multiple tablecloths! It's a great way to add some of the character and interest you're looking for without making the physical table take on the whole burden of being "unexpected and unique." Flowers, too, and candles, and an area rug...

A round table in white would be great. Simple, clean lines. But I think a lighter wood would also pair well. I very much like the table in the link Alana posted.
I think you can get a good price on a Saarinen knockoff at whiteonwhite.com. I would also suggest looking for a lighter version of the Cherner round table at DWR.

A glass-topped pedestal table.

Hmm. I had the opposite instinct that everyone else has had -- I immediately envisioned these chairs with something curvy and glossily red -- Dominique Mathieu's Dorian table.

Conran's carries it...

Since I am guessing that the original will break the bank, how about improvising? A pine table with turned legs should not be hard to find (I am thinking salvaged/vintage/antique), and would be easy to have painted (enamalled?) red. If that is too much for you, how about just pairing them with an antique pine table (nicely scarred)?
The straightness of these chairs is just begging for contrast in my opinion...

It might not be especially daring or exciting, but we have the exact same chairs (got them as a wedding gift from my parents, though were upset to find the Kyoto's from DWR at about the same price only after we'd already purchased these), and we paired them with Crate and Barrel's Madison Dining Table. The Madison's matching chairs look very similar to the Target ones and the Kyoto's, so we thought it was a good look.

Keep it cheap and go with an inexpensive table from IKEA.
This one's fairly traditional, and is available in a range of wood tones:

This inexpensive Tulip table knockoff would provide a nice contrast:

And I think this one might be the best match of all, a traditional round pedestal table in contrasting white:

That one also comes with a leaf, so it can be extended into a large oval table.

I second sunspot42's white ikea pedestal table and also the tulip table (the real thing, not the ikea knockoff which in this case is rather unattractive).

Depends on what the rest of your palette is like. At my house, a white table would be a bit jarring, but I would want contrast too, so I would go for a blond wood.

We used chairs similar to yours for a clientâs dining area.
This chair has modern lines but a classic weight and presence, so we went with a substantial table with clean minimal form. see it here Yes, we custom designed it, but you might be pleasantly surprised at the cost of a cast concrete table (not sure what budget you have) and there are vendors for this work most anywhere. As long as you donât plan to move it often, it is a nice compliment and unique solution.

My suggestion is the Carona table from Room & Board http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/collection.do?method=get&id=377595&cat=54

I'm bucking the trend and suggesting the substantial and oh so flexible Torrance Dining Table from Pier One. The online photo doesn't do it justice.

I don't like one of these ideas. Just buy a table to match. You'll keep all of it much longer.

Personally I would not pair these chairs with a white dining table. I like the idea of the glass top table from cb2 recommended by 8ry.
I have similar chairs from Scandinavian designs except that the leather on the seats in white and I have paired it with the dark Bjursta table from Ikea since it's extendable and I live in a small apartment.

You can always lighten the whole thing up by using colorful table runners and place mats.
view MSN's profile
I agree with MSN, I think the table 8ry recommended is best, and then you could get a really long white tablecloth and tie it with a cord around the narrow part of the base- it would be offbeat and then if you lived somewhere where the white looked too stark, you'd still have a great table.

This is what I love about these question threads. You eventually get enough opinions to realise there's no right or wrong! It's a matter of taste and what will work in your space. See which of these many options appeal and then go for it. Good luck!

They look like just the thing to go with a table I saw on sale for $699 at Design Within Reach. Not to be too much of a shill, but when they have sales they sometimes are within reach.
