Q: I'm a newly minted therapist trying to furnish my first office. I was inspired by your site to select the Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Dexter sofa for my office, but could use some suggestions for a good armchair or two to go with it. I would go with the Dexter chair to match, but it's pretty costly and I'm looking for a little variety within a mid-century modern style. Any suggestions? Much appreciation.

the quintessential chair for a therapist's office, to me, is the Eames lounger and ottoman.

I definitely think some variety is in order-both in chair style and in upholstery.
The Tanner chair would work and keep the same basic lines and scale. Or you could try really mixing it up with something more sculptural like this .
I think the key part is ensuring comfort for you as I imagine you do a lot of sitting in said chair without sacrificing style!

my hyperlinks didn't work .
1st was the Tanner chair from MB BW http://www.mgbwhome.com/tanner_uph_ch.asp
2nd suggestion was for something along the lines of the Boden chair from Room and Board http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/product/detail.do?productGroup=20063

I think one (or depending on your space, two) of these would look pretty sweet. Nice mid century styling but simple design and lines and the color would match and complement.

Would anyone sit on the chair? ie. if they are just for show, a simple but well made danish style lounge chair would be pretty nice.

Congrats on your new beginnings Matthew!
I'll leave chair suggestions to others, but do want to express my agreement with Mariah- think COMFORT. Comfort comfort comfort. Not only in your chair selection, but also with regard to the decorative pillows for the sofa and lighting. I am fortunate as the time I spent on a therapists sofa was in a very stylish, very fabulous office in an old converted mansion. I was always very appreciative of the therapists effort to make the space look as good as it did. Entering into a well-appointed, comforting environment where I felt at ease was a great relief coming from the chaos elsewhere in my life.
Good luck to you!

I like the office in "In Treatment"--and an Irish accent helps, too.

I think the most important thing is that the chair is really comfortable for you. Once you find a chair you like the look of, make sure it's super comfortable because obviously you'll be sitting in it all day.

Wow, you must want to project a very formal, masculine image. That couch is very imposing.

Definitely something mid century like eames lounge chair.

I'm assuming that the couch is for the client and the proposed armchair is for you?
I'd suggest that the Eames lounge chair might be inappropriate - the footstool would get in the way and the seating position is too laid back to project a professional image.
The Arne Jacobsen Swan chair is a little bland but it would compliment the couch. The Hans Wegner Shell chair is a little more audacious and upmarket. For a real statement, try any of Grant Featherston's low-backed armchairs (or similar - google for pictures).

definitely think an eames lounge chair is inappropriate as a therapist. not only because it lays back too far but also because it has an imposing presence that dominates the room & says "i'm the master of this space." i think a therapist is more like a behind the scenes person, coaxing out certain details & guiding the client. the swan chair sounds great as does the above room & board white leather chair. i also agree with those who say it should above all be comfortable!

PS: that's a great sofa & i know if i were a client, i'd love it

Because your chocolate leather couch already gives off a somewhat imposing "therapist" vibe, I would go with something softer and more "cozy" for clients who need to feel more at home.
I really like the Ikea Ektorp chairs, and would suggest you grab one in a print (if available). Here are a couple links I grabbed:

Wow! Thanks everyone and AT for your help -- you all have made really great suggestions. And yes to comfort! Working on a small desk and some lighting fixtures, too. I really love this site!
I'm actually not getting the Dexter in leather; here's a link to a pic of the dexter that I think I'm settling on:
