Contemporary Hanging Plant Baskets & Containers?
Good Questions

9-29-hanging-plant-orb.jpgQ: Hanging plant baskets. Where do I find one that doesn't look like it belongs in a British granny's cottage? I acquired many plants this summer and I don't have too much room, right now some of them live on my kitchen table! My place already has a few ceiling hooks so I'd love some ideas, maybe some DIY ideas?

Editor: I spotted a Hanging Basket made from white metal tubesat the Conran Shop last week — they have quite a lot of modern planter options (especially now, at the end of the season). I would also suggest looking at Sprout Home which has an even better selection of contemporary hanging plant containers — they sell the pictured Plant Orb for $104.

Who else has resources (or DIY ideas) for chic hanging planters?

I just found these stainless cable hangers:

They'll work with any planter that has a rim. Cheap, too!

That Plant Orb is indeed fantastic, but I'm generally loath to pay that much for something like a flower pot, especially when there's an option like farmhousemoderne's. I think that's great! Use any flower pot as a hanging one, so you can get pretty much any style you could want at a lot less dough.

I wrote about these planters at Chiasso not long ago (http://marthaandtom.com/2009/09/hanging-planters-on-sale/)... but they have since sold out. I mention them because Chiasso (http://www.chiasso.com/) is a great source for this sort of thing. They have a great looking garden hose "bowl" in their sale section at the moment, for example.

Find a deep bowl that you love, drill three holes with a ceramic drill bit, and add some aluminum wire (or the awesome cable hangers farmhousemoderne suggested).

Ikea has modern ceramic hanging pots. I couldn't find them on the website, but I almost bought a few at the store.

You could try the ikea kitchen organizer ASKER
Container http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70105659
and hang it with a nice string from your ceiling. It's small, but maybe it will look nice with succulents.

as mentioned, get a container that you like and use that. Especially if you are going to buy a plant pot without holes in it ( and I'm amazed at how many Don't have drain holes).

This hanging one is really pretty, but for that price you can get a nice piece of real china.

IKEA's hanging planters are really nice and very affordable but they only have them from around March through July. They are plain half spheres with three holes for the hanging cord of your choice. They come in matte black and a glossy gray-white. Maybe a soft green, too. Keep them in mind for next spring.

These containers look nice, but don't make very good plant containers if you're actually try to keep your plant alive.

Since there is no drainage, the roots will rot in a matter of a few months. Hanging planters are okay when there is drainage, but then they're best suited for outdoors so that the water can drain out onto the ground.
