Good Idea: Stencil as Wallpaper

wallstencil.jpg

This actually a Good Idea and a Good Question rolled into one! Apartment Therapy reader Amy sent us this image of her foyer. Instead of hanging wallpaper, she stenciled a Moroccan Damask design, which she purchased from Stencil Planet. This is such a great way to get a wallpaper look without the permanence of wallpaper.

Now for the Good Question: Amy's also working on sourcing a a console/storage/bench, and wants your suggestions on what would look good in this foyer space.

(Note: Include a pic of your problem and your question gets posted first. Email questions and pics with QUESTIONS in subject line to: newyork(at)apartmenttherapy(dot)com)

(For the painting project, Amy used Benjamin Moore Golden Orchard for the base color and Metallic Glaze in Pearlescent White for the stencil.)

Any suggestions for her console/storage/bench? Anyone?

I'd like to talk about color rather than specific pieces: I'd suggest a console that is primarily dark wood or deep brown.

Black may be a little severe, while white would really just appear pastel orange in the reflected lighting.

If you would like to use another color (since you clearly enjoy some color in your life), you'll have to consider how the orange local color will affect it; will the color look warmer, oranger, will the colors vibrate visually off each other? Find something that isn't as vibrant, like a slate blue, olive green, or gray.

You could also paint the furniture with the same stencil design using the colors opposite from what you chose for the wall....or the same so it blends in.

How about a MCM teak dresser for lots of storage and a cool look, mirror on top, lamp etc.

My first thought was "I want to see a reddish orange console pop against that wall!" On further staid consideration (IE reading the comments) I realized that not everybody could take that day after day. So my second thought is pick a light colored wood that complements the tones in the floor and wall to keep things bright.

I'd go with teak or darker (and I agree about avoiding black or white). It would look nice to accent with several shades of slate blue/grey.

thx for all the ideas. i'd love to find a piece that's about 10" deep with lots of storage. i'm also liking this console a lot:

which would go well with the rest of the apt.
