I have an intercom system in my apartment which has a buzzer inside of it. Which is precisely the problem! The buzzer is obnoxiously loud and sets my two dogs to wildly barking when it goes off.
Is there a way that I can swap out the buzzer on my end for something which is much less intrusive?
Alternatively, can you give me any references to the internal workings of these intercom systems - I am mechanicially inclined enough to be able to change this myself, but if there is an easy solution, or I can pay someone to change it, I would rather not spend the time ascertaining the way to do it from scratch. Thanks, Jon
Good question. We usually put an old sponge inside the bell, so we're not much help here. Anyone else.... MGR

This is an excellent question. So much so, that upon reading it I immediately went to my intercom and unscrewed it from the wall to check it out. Turns out that mine is like a regular phone so I could conceivably change the buzzer to another external noise maker or a light (which could be cool) by bypassing the buzzer.
However all my plans were foiled when I discovered that my super had previously crazy-glued the apparatus to the mounting plate. When I pulled the unit from the wall, it made quite a mess and getting to the wires would require some frontier workmanship. So be careful!
Foiled by "Super" glue! Drat!
In order to avoid electricution, you must first cut off the power supply going to your intercom. Unfortunatly this will be located somewhere hidden in your building.
