apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Good Question: Sunbrella Fabrics for Urban Terrace?

Hello AT, Remember me? I moved to an apartment with an outdoor terrace and I'm hoping to create an oasis in the concrete jungle with a teak dining set, sectional sofas, outdoor kitchen island, etc. etc. I'm going to follow the color scheme from Crate & Barrels Trovata collection (cocoa for dining chair cushions, sapphire for sofas and "Trovata Stripe" for a custom shade sail). Does anyone knows the distributor that sells the "Trovata Stripe" Sunbrella fabric? C&B renames fabrics so I haven't been able to track down the true name. I checked the Sunbrella website but no luck. The "Trovata Stripe" must be from one of the Sunbrella distributors that have exclusive designs. Any ideas? Thanks so much.

It is possible (and likely) that Travota is licensed exclusively through Crate & Barrel. Does anyone know otherwise? Any advice for sourcing Sunbrella in the city?

Fabric mills often create exclusive patterns and prints for big furniture retailers such as C&B, PB, etc - They last a season and are discontinued forever (Planned obsolescence)

Retailers do this specifically so that folks won't be able to get their pattern someplace else - If you want it, you have to get it through them.

As far as your shade sail: I'd stick to one of your solid colors.

I don't know if they have the exact colors, but http://www.joann.com has sunbrella fabric for sale.

I'd be worried about getting too matchy, and locking yourself into that pattern. If you pull one of the nicer neutral colors from the stripe (or two - and still get a stripe), you'll have a potentially less overwhelming look and can switch it out if your deck furniture doesn't last as many NYC winters as you'd hoped (mine only makes it 2 years usually, regardless of how "high quality"), or if you just change your taste later.

i work in the textile/upholstery industry, and know for certain that sunbrella does make some patterns exclusively for certain retailers - this negates competition and guarantees that their prices stay higher. that being said, joann does carry some sunbrella, so does restoration hardware. it might be a good idea for you to get a swatch or at least a picture of your sunbrella choices to take with you to various retailers. sunbrella is also carried by people who make awnings, patio furniture, and create soft furnishings for boats. good luck.

First, let me say how terrifically jealous I am. You have found a terrific place. Please don't tell me it has great views too. There! That's out of the way!

Have you tried Crate and Barrel? They should be happy to get you additional yardage from the mfg.

Thank you all for your thoughts. I was leaning towards a striped shade sail because I like the way the C&B umbrella looks, but sticking to solid colors sounds like a smart move.

"thepictures": my wife used the free floorplanner.com to create the floorplan... It has its pros and cons but works on the visual aspect. If you need serious measurement accuracy, use Visio or real CADing software.
