Howdy AT,
I have a home office and just purchased a new G5 computer for myself - which now brings my total to 2 computers - 2 monitors - a couple external hard drives - a scanner - and a few different epson computers
- a fax machine. I'm desperately seeking a desk configuration/solution that can accommodate all this stuff.
I'm thinking something out of a computer lab - a bit industrial/institutional - but functional - and something that saves space really isn't an issue --
Help!

The Therapist is feeling all out of sorts because not only does a reader think he's "smarmy," SKGR doesn't like his new voice either. We were inspired by Manolo's Shoe Blog, but haven't found our voice.....
This is where we would look:
- The Navigator - this is cool, high tech and minimal, but might form the center of your workspace
- Anthrocarts - these things are designed for computer junkies and can form any configuration
- Metro Shelving - you have to be a little more creative with this, but you can build anything you want, at any level, put it on wheels and run wires all over the place. A simple wide desktop for working and a lot of this shelving is a cool, cheap way to go. (Thanks, Glenn!) MGR

I think it's interesting you're working on the tone of the Blog. I noticed your move to the "royal we" tone almost. You're the best, no matter the tone, but it's great you have the blog to a point where you can focus on that.
I second Anthro carts for big computer rigs. I am selling mine, because I now use a laptop. Look for it soon in Apt. Therapy Classifieds!
you have a GREAT tone and don't let some insecure person who focuses too much time on a bloggers "tone" get you down. you're beautiful, baby!
Maxwell, you are so NOT smarmy. Don't worry about your "voice," just keep being you.
Is it winter that's making everyone so cranky?
I use a metro shelving tower.
With cable ties and little strapping (on the stuff that might leap off) you can have a LOT of gear neatly stowed, but ready for use.
Cover/hang two sides with "paneling" (mirrors/ cloth/ nice veneer plyood) and you can turn it around in a corner (panneling side out) and hide all the gear when you don't want to look at it.
Not bad for about 2ft x 2ft floor space.
I've had desks custom-made for my office by Leader Restaurant Supply 191 Bowery St, 212-677-1982. They're fast, reasonably priced and they deliver.
I'm in a similar situation needing a big-ass, but attractive, desk for lots of gear. I've been looking at Biomorph's Pro model (www.biomorph.com). Not inexpensive but quite nice. I went to the showroom; they're sturdy and very nicely finished products.
I'm designing my dream desk at this very moment, largely based on Biomorph's, and am going to get bids from a few shops. It might be cheaper.
Anyhow, do check out Biomorph.
I also suggest a simple KVM switch. it allows you to "man" two computers with a single keyboard/mouse/monitor. It saves deskspace in a very big way. Other options include sticking your old machine into a closet, and if needed, getting at it through the network with something like Apple Remote Desktop.

I have one of these, and it's GREAT! There's a compartment in the back that hides all the wires. Set your G5 on the floor, or better yet, one of those fun rolling platforms, so you can skoot it about to access wiring.
These are very industrial, but can be customized:

Mill-finish legs and a black resin top makes for a nice table...
I am selling my fantastic Biomorph desk which is in yellow finish (black base) and in excellent condition. I'm moving to smaller office space and must get a smaller desk.
Interested? My # is 718-622-3222. Kristi.
Here's what I use...with a reclining easychair:)

Tip: Get the extra heavy base.
