The million dollar question. We started Apartment Therapy with the intention of answering this question, and are still struggling to put together a good roster of handymen. This is the moment. Every handyman you provide or find will be put into our Stores (and services) Guide for eternity.
I'm in the process of trying to find a local handyman to come to my small Soho apartment and fix various things that are in need of repair: install some molding where wall meets floor; touch up painting near floor after carpeting was removed; properly mount surge protector box on wall; some caulking...
The list goes on. Probably 5-6 hours work.
Do you know a good resource for finding quality handmen? Many advertise on Craig's list, but how do you know if the work is good? Does any website exist that lists pre-screened handymen, or ones with reviews? Thanks, Bennett

I too have been researching on craigslist for a handyperson to put in vinyl tile, paint etc.
Most are way too overpriced. I've been taking pics w/ my digital camera, putting them up on yahoo and having the prospective handyperson give me a general estimate.
But that still doesn't answer how good they are, and if their references are real or not.
Also a headsup to apartment therapy to include Jersey City in its listings. We are just as close to NYC as Brooklyn, Queens etc, if not closer. Were looking for good deals too!
Hey, Hotcha,
Love Jersey City, and just need to people there to talk to us here in Tribeca... If you have a great store, etc, that everyone should know about, send it in and we'll list it.
Hi. I am the handy man u r seeking. I have references. I actually prefer small jobs. I am very creative. I have references. I bring my own tools and I clean up after my self.
I prefer to know pretty much what the job involves so that I can bring the tools and supplies I need to complete the job in one trip.
Hope to hear from you.
i have a dent in my bedroom door that i need repair as soon as possible
here! get to know me. (212) 330-6811. I'm good for a lot of work (combining carpentry, home maintenace, remodeling and handyman with 1-off artistic qualities)whether it's rough or finished; creative & ordinary: A half day minimum. We meet each other, I estimate the material and labor, and you decide. Half a day is 4 hours for $150.00 After that it's by the 1/4 hour at $37.50 My work doesn't let people down. Good vibes keep me busy. My estimates are free. See by calling!
Well what the heck!
I am not in NYC but I am actually located in Moorhead, MN. If anyone might be looking for services and stumbles upon this site I would invite them to give me a call for any services they may need. The handymen are sometimes the ones who are there when the Contractors can't be! There has to be someone that will do the small stuff too!

NYcitySTUFF was named "best Handyman in NYC" by NY Mag in their "Best of New York" issue 3/08 and they have tons of references. Fast response, great rates and great guys! I'm biased but they really are great. www.nycitystuff.com

I found a GREAT handyman. His name is Alan Holstein. He charges $80 and hour, but he is fast, courteous and very prompt. He actually showed up 10 minutes early! I cannot recommend him enough. He knows how to do everything, including electrics. He is a very nice man. His # is 212-957-8345 and his email is alanholst@aol.com.

I've used SPEEDYFIXIT, hanydman company in NYC for the past 6 years. He does everything from change a dimmer to small renovation. Reliable, on time, and highly skilled (not to mention affordable).
