Good Question: Where Can I Find a Platform Bed That Lifts for Storage

2004_7_question mark.jpgIt's not exactly Feng Shui, but in New York, you gotta be creative.....

Hi! I'm on the hunt for a contemporary platform bed where the mattress lifts for storage -- any idea where I can get this? Michelle

The best resource we know for this is Flou's storage base solution, but they can be a little pricey. MGR

I just got the pacific bed from Crate and Barrel, which I discovered easily hides under-bed boxes to store stuff in. May be a good solution.

Flou's product on the website looks attractive, but it would be more helpful if it were in English. Anyone know of places in the NY area. My current platform bed was not designed to lift easily enough for practical storage. Should of sprung for one with at least drawers lo' those several years ago when I bought it.

IKEA strikes again, with under-the-mattress, lift-up storage. Not sure if it is a specific boxspring, or whether it is an adaptor for any of their boxsprings, but they do offer a new Flou alternative.

hi - I looked on ikea.com and I don't see it...

IKEA's site is only a tiny fraction of what's available in their stores or via their catalogue.

Jim:

If I'm not mistaken, I think Flou products are available at ABC Carpet & Home...

Flou is also available at Repertoire, on Grand between Wooster and Greene. I believe there is also a Repertoire in Boston.

Basics Furniture (92 7th Avenue near 15th St.)has a queen-size bed in their window that lifts for storage (oddly, it's not featured on their web site). It costs a little over $1,000 and I'm considering buying it myself. Anybody out there who's actually bought it and who cares to comment?

Does anyone know where I can get a contemporary bed that has storage drawers underneath? I have already seen the so called "Ultimate Bed" (the Swiss Army Knife of beds) and it dated and cheap. I would like a contemporary "Captains" bed for an adult. It needs to fit into a Miami Beach studio. I prefer something low profile.

Hey David or anyone else owning a Crate & Barrel pacific bed, could you give me your opinions on the bed? How is the quality? I know most Crate & Barrel beds are wonderful, but since this is the least expensive, I'm wondering, is it solid wood? If not, is it still much better than Ikea or West Elm stuff?
Thanks!

I have seen this crazy sofa, bed, wall storage unit. It is from a uk site so it might not be of any help but it is still a great design.

There is also a uk model at

I'm also looking for same. Found this one also available in kit form or you can buy just the hardware. Price seems good.

If anyone has ordered the Lucca bed that Dean Turchi mentions above can they share their experience with assembling it? I would like to order this bed but I wonder if I can correctly assemble the complex mechanism together. Thanks.

I have been looking for the same thing! I guess everybody is... Since I am an internet auction shopperaholic, I went to ebay and put used the keywords: modern platform bed storage . And when that page came up, check the title and description. Several cool beds. I don't care for the kind where the platform lifts up, I would like the kind with drawers on both sides. But I want a modern low profile. Maybe the furniture manufacturers should be reading this page and create some?

I forgot to mention that design within reach has a bed named Cosimo. It does only have 2 drawers, I don't know why they can't have 4 drawers! Pretty pricey though, $3600. It's currently on sale from over $4000, but it's only in the light colored wood.

www.doorstorefurniture.com has "Tranquility" beds, which supposedly is the same thing as Tau series from John Kelly Furniture (so they told me via email). They weren't high on details during this communication, but that would make this bed bamboo veneer. See http://www.doorstorefurniture.com/onsale.html, although they only show wenge finish (in catalog they had cherry also).

I just discovered that www.eq3.com has a platform storage bed for less than $900.

I agree with your comment, Ellen, the furniture manufactuers should be reading this site. I find that I'm usually a couple of years ahead of the manufacturers. It seems as if the cheap producers can turn out requested designs faster than a quality furniture maker. Will be checking this site for additinal ideas. The EQ3 looks interesting.

My friend just bought the Lucca bed from Overstock.com. I think they only have full and King. it is leather, but it does lift the mattress up.

Also, if you're looking for something a little different, modern and quirky, check out www.sapapa.com. This is an Israeli company that makes bed and couches with a hydraulic system that can not only lift the mattress for storage, but can lift the headboard as well. They even have a new multimedia system going on. They have showrooms at Aminach Furniture in Queens and Brooklyn. I haven't been there yet, but I definitely want to check them out.

Pompanoosuc Mills has a platform bed with inset storage drawers so the platform appears to float. Very well made, and a nice streamlined look, but pricy at over $3000.

I've had the Lucca storage bed for one week now and I'm very happy with it.

It takes some effort to unpack and put together. It's best done with two people. There's some moderate lifting and plenty of bolts to install. But the assembly system is pretty logical, and we had no trouble with it. The bed is very well constructed.

The pistons work incredibly well. Opening and closing the platform takes no effort. (Although the pistons are calibrated so that they only close easily with the mattress on--which makes sense of course.) I do worry about how long it will take the pistons to wear out and start leaking, but that's just because I'm a worrier. Time will tell.

The bed is very solid. Nothing shakes, rattles, bounces, or otherwise seems unstable. I jumped up and down on the bed after putting the mattress on. That's probably not real good for the frame, which is hinged in the middle (but secured with bolts), but it felt solid.

Oh, and the storage space is amazing. I feel like I got my money's worth.

Ikea used to have the coffee table (or tv stand) storage. Why did they stop selling this? I have one and can't live without it. I did find one selling on craigs's list:

Jim,

Flous' SoHo store is at: 42 Greene Street, 212-941-9101

At least I THINK it's still there....I've been wanting one of their beds for a while, but they are very pricey. Still, they do offer beds that lift on a sort of hydraulic life with plenty of storage underneath..

I was there the other day. They have several styles with storage.

I just went to Flou yesterday, they have amazing beds, and many platforms. Be prepared to spend at LEAST $4,000 and possibly up to $7,000 or more on just the bed (no mattress). It is quite expensive. The headboard we wanted was $8k and the bed $5k, so together it was like, $13,000. EACH end table was $1,500!! Crazy. It is a very expensive store, but it has amazing beds, if you have the loot.
Does anyone know of platform storage beds more in the $2,000-$3,500 range? Either I'm finding them too cheapy or astronomically expensive. Thanks! (ps, my designer told me to just draw up what I want and have a carpenter make it).

This is a great platform bed with a very cool spring mechanism that lift the bed up to reveal pretty significant storage. I love it.

I have the Lucca storage bed and I love it. Assembly was difficult but manageable. It's recommended to have at least 2 people or one strong, handy person. But once it's assembled, it looks and functions great. My only complaint is that the headboard is large and difficult to maneuver when moving. Especially since Manhattan apts tend to have narrow hallways and tight corners. I had to have the bed disassembled entirely since I couldn't detach the headboard and keep the rest in tact. If anyone knows of an easier way, please help!! I'm moving yet again...
