Good Question: Where Do I Find an *Extreme* Drop-leaf Table

2004_7_question mark.jpgOur apartment is very small, and we'd love one of the big drop-leaf tables you occasionally see in old, dusty houses. These tables have enormous leaves that fall almost to the floor, and, when closed, are only six inches to a foot wide. They seat six comfortably with both leaves up, but, because the leaves are rectangular, they seat two very nicely with only one leaf up. Josh

2004_7_drop leaf table.JPGThe type of drop leaf table Josh is looking for is an excellent solution for small apartments, and we have seen them only as antiques or as the less attractive modern versions at Gothic Cabinet Craft. Josh also mentions this one at Koo de Kir, which is similar.

We don't have a silver bullet here, but would Google among the Vermont furniture mafia ("vermont furniture") as well as "shaker furniture" and surf eBay to start. We would also image Google "drop leaf tables" to see where that leads.

If you have any ideas, please comment below.... (Thanks, Josh!) MGR

I don't know if this falls under "dusty & old" but Heywood Wakefield made two tables like this - their Gateleg table and the Dropleaf table:

I think you'll have better luck finding them if you use the term 'gateleg' table. I have one of the modern ones, and it is quite handy in a too-small apt.

I have a gateleg table that folds to be less than a foot across that I bought years ago at Surprise Surprise on 3rd ave and 12th. It's not high quality, but it's done well for me when I've needed it. I've also seen ones that fold to about 18 to 24 inches and have folding chairs that sit inside at some of the other smaller, local furniture places.

I have one of these. I bought it in Ft. Wayne 37 years ago at George & Kates Colonial Shop. I believe it was made by Pennsylvania House. but am not sure. It is cherry and was beautiful with the6 ladderback chairs until my 3 children tilted back on the chairs. Now I only have 3 left and have been looking for mates for a long time. This table is good in a small or large room, as I can expand mine with the leafs to seat 12. Good luck

I was fortunate to find a Heywood Wakefield gateleg at the Brimfield Antigue fair last May in Mass. It is beautiful now but when I found it ithad been treated badly with knife cuts on the top and finish was worn down to bare wood with a lot of mold on the legs..I had it professionally refinished and it is beautiful. Just right for my husband and I or extended family when they visit. It is only a foot wide when closed but opens to sit 6 with its beautiful wide drop leafs that extend to the floor. I had never heard of Heywood Wakefield but now scan everything. My $50.00 plus $250.00 refinishing can't be beat. Hope you find one!!!

I make these tables using pine ,oak, maple,or ash lumber.the base table can be any size you wish but the drop length can not be more than 28 inches. I also make a table that folds up to 1 foot in length & extends to 10 feet or 40 square feet to seat 12.One person can set it up.

check out the Door Store's Stockholm Cosmopolitan Bar Table. A high quality version of the drop leaf with the storage section inside, with a bar rack inside and a center section which inverts to a metal inlay for hot items on one side and matching wood on the other.

I agree with Josh so much that I just finished building one. (I was looking for examples of drawer pulls when I came upon this site and his question). If you want to see how it came out, please check the web page: http://rdooley.com/Cabinetry.htm. Scroll to the bottom of that page.

I don't have a lathe, so the William and Mary legs were purchased. The rest I made from alder, and it is 36 x 60 when opened. There are drawers on both sides. I'd love to get comments (roger@rdooley.com). We plan to use it when we have family over and need the extra table. Meanwhile it folds away and takes very little space. Roger

Question for Eric Webster that makes these tables. I'm looking to make one that has a table top that is 24" (projection) x 4o" x 42" wide with two 28" drop leafs.

I may be interested in the table your describe above that folds up to 1 foot in length & extends to 10 feet or 40 square feet to seat 12.

Can you email to discuss?

The "Stockholm Cosmopolitan " table sold at the Door Stoor is manufactured by Skovby. Also is sold at Wim & Karen (W&K) in Manhattan. Also look for midcentury style by names of designers of the time (George Nelson made one, so did Heywood Wakefield).

We owned a table like that that we bought 50 years ago. It was bought at a regular (nothing fancy) store during the time that "Danish Modern was the in thing. I would suggest that you check Danish style furnitue manufacturers.

Meanwhile, I have a drop leaf oval table that has warped and I would love to replace the top because I love the leggs. The leggs are screwed into an apron and is 23" accros and 42" wide with a 17" drop. As long as I am replaceing it, I would love it to be larger. Any ideas? I'm getting nothing from Google. Everything is pedistal or rectangular.

Debra, I'm about to put a beautiful mid-century gate-letg table designed by Bruno Mathsson on craig's list. I'ts got a lovely warm stripped cherry finish and is in excellent condition and I have 8 mid-century american designed charis that work well with it ...It seats 8-10 comfortably when extended and folds up to around 20" wide.

Let me know if you're interested. I could arrange to send you some digital pics.

I'm also looking for an affordable drop leaf/gate leg table. Ideally something in the darker tones. I don't have space for a full table, but I do like to invite people for meals and plan to rearrange for such an occasion.

I build custom furniture that I sell at reasonable prices.
I currently have a drop leaf, gateleg, wood/metal table on ebay you might be interested in.
Compared to the prices I'm seeing on ebay, my prices are half that of the other sellers.
I price my items so I can make a little profit, but since the shipping is so high, I try to keep the price lower so the total will not discourage people from purchasing my work.

I just bought a beautiful dropleaf table at Target on clearance, so check Target out first as I am very impressed with the quality. "Thomas O'Brien drop leaf table" measures about 64 x 34 when opened and the two sides drop almost to the ground. Is about 12 inches wide when closed. It is available on the internet for $299. May find it at local Target stores for 50% off.
Good luck.

Hi,

I am living in London and have been trying to buy a modern gateleg table for two years! If anyone has any suggestions or is able to build something for me, please email! (I have not found a US supplier willing to ship)

Just a note to buyers, make sure you put your feet under the table, as sometimes the legs can get in the way.

Happy hunting!

Random comment: My parents have owned an apparent Mathsson "Maria Drop" since their tiny Brooklyn honeymoon apartment in 1961. (Unlike most of the furniture I've bought, they've still got almost all of their original Danish Modern furnishings.) It's only in recent years, with 7 grandchildren, that they've needed to open all four leaves. (I think I was 10 years old before I learned about those two extra leaves in the middle.)
It's an amazing design, taking up less than a foot against the wall, and operable by one person of moderate strength.
I've just been searching the web to learn about it. Apparently nobody is making any sort of knockoff, and originals are selling for about $2000.

I am also looking for this type of table for the same reason. I recently saw one at Ikea. It measures 25 1/4 x 52 3/4 (1 leaf) 79 1/8 (2 leaves) and is 41 3/8 w. This would allow 2 people to sit with both leaves down. The table appears on page 192 of the current catalog

Susan,

We've just moved into a very small condo in RI, and are looking for a gateleg table that, when gateleg wings are down and table is pushed against a wall, would measure not much more than a foot out from the wall. The width could be up to 4 feet. Do you think any of your tables might fit that description?

Not sure who is still on this topic but I am also looking for a gateleg table that would be about a foot deep when closed up but would seat about 8 when extended. I am looking for an older design and not the dutch modern. I don't care about the actual age. I would also be open to talking to those individauls that talked about making them or if they would share their plans so I can make the table.

I live in Virginia.

I am looking for an antique table that has a centre pull which when you pull the table comes apart and in the centre out comes the leaf for the table. Does anyone know what these tables are called. they are more retangular in shape with the legs being located in the centre of the table running along the length of the table

I will have for sale a gateleg table measuring 30"X 42" when the two sides are down. Each side is 21X42 which when the two sides are up the table extended is 72"X42. I also have 2 additional leaves for the table. It can easily seat 12 when fully extended but takes up only a small amount of room when folded down. A chair can fit on either end. It was made by the old Kroeghler manufacturing (not the stuff from Value city furniture) and is approximately 50+ years old and is in the "blonde wood." It comes with 6 chairs which desperately need refinishing. The table top has a formica type finish and cannot be redone into another color finish. It also comes with a two piece hutch also in the blonde wood. The top has two pieces of sliding glass in front of two shelves. It has a locking mechinism cabinet on the bottom with one shelf and three good size drawers, one felt lined.

If you are interested, please e-mail me privately and I can sent pictures.

The UK / Ireland / AU store Habitat sells a very nice oak / veneer drop leaf table that's quite modern. unfortunately they don't ship to the US, but if you're in that area, check them out. (Boy do I wish someone would open a Habitat franchise in the U.S.!)

I have, what I thought was an expensive, Old English Gate Leg Table. I saw the exact same one in a web site that went for about $1,200. I put mine in Craigs list for $700 and was basically blasted by "people in the know" that I was selling a piece of junk....a reproduction. How the hell do you know what you have? There's no markings on it.......how the heck to ya know whats a reproduction and what's not..........I sent one guy a photo of the flat ware drawer and he looked at the joints and said it was a 1920's----1930's reproduction...... help!
