hi apartment therapy! please help! i just moved to a beautiful apartment in brooklyn heights and i am having a really hard time with the windows. they are double encased and jut out into the room, i'm assuming for insulation and noise reduction. i am not allowed to drill into the frame of the encasement, shown below. i can drill anywhere else, as long as its not directly into a moulding, which there are many layers of above the windows. i've been researching roller shades with extension brackets but i have no idea how brackets work and i don't want to spend a fortune on custom shades only to have them not work with my situation. if you or your readers can suggest anything, i'd be eternally grateful. also, there is a working heating vent directly under one of the windows. i really don't want to do short curtains, but i guess anything is better than my current solution of newsprint! thank you!

I can't see too clearly, but it looks like it would be possible to mount a simple suspension rod on the inside of the molding. You could then hang a lightweight curtain from that.

Looks like Cityproof window enclosures, very nice. Go custom, get the extension brackets. Anyone fabricating this should be able to measure and set it up right for you.

PotteryBarn teen has a cable system you might be able to mount on the far right hand side of the wall. Since I can only view the window and that side of the wall I'm guessing you can run the wire across to the other side. That or use this on the ceiling across away from the molding. There are also rods that can be used on the ceiling vs. the frame encasement. Country Curtains carries them and I found these in JCPenny.

Also, you can purchase tie backs so that way your curtains don't rest on your radiator.
Hope that was helpful. Good luck with your new place!

Truthfully with that lovely gutter looking thing next to the wall and with the casement extending to to the ceiling trim I think you have to mount on it.
I would just say-hey guys, theres this stuff called wood putty and you can paint right over it.
I would use woven woods so nothing melts or catches fire
in a shade scenario and I would paint that heater a lovely accent color or black to make it a focal point.
When its painted white it makes it look like someone tried to camouflage the heater to no avail.

What gorgeous windows! How much light reduction/privacy do you need? Or do you need shades/curtains primarily for decorative reasons?

thanks everyone for your help. lisa- i wouldn't even cover the windows but im streetside on the second floor so i need privacy. as it's a rental, i'm trying to find the most economical solution-which i think is curtains. i also have 3 huge bay windows in the bedroom that are bigger than the windows i posted here. perhaps another post for those....
