Good Questions: Appliance Donation & Pickup?

10-26-appliance.jpgHello AT,

I will soon be renovating my kitchen and would love to donate the appliances and sink to a deserving recipient.

Any ideas on who will take my appliances, and even better, pick them up?

Thanks! Craig

Angel Street Thrift Shop may be able to help you. It is on 17th St in Manhattan.

Where are you?

I would do a local search of homeless shelters and churches/religious organizations. They often have kitchens that need upgrades. They also may be good resources of who else to contact if they aren't in need themselves. Good luck! I think this is a great idea!!

I would also love to find a place (in Brooklyn) that would take a stove and micro--we're getting rid of them in a week or two

try Build it Green NYC http://www.bignyc.org/ a building parts salvage center in Queens. They only take certain items so check on their site - they'll come pick up under certain conditions.

My local freecycle (http://freecycle.org/) frequently has posts regarding appliances. Most situations state that the recipient is responsible for pickup at the donor's convenience.

However the organization is not necessarily for those in the greatest need.

You can donate appliances, building materials, and furniture to a Habitat for Humanity reuse store. I can't find a list of these stores on Habitat's web site, but try calling a local Habitat office to see if there's one near you. They will (or at least mine will) pick up large items.

Giving it to a Habitat ReStore is nice because you can get a tax deduction for it as well. Where I live they don't pick up, but the shelter for domestic violence victims does, and uses the appliances to set people up in their new homes.

Here's the index:

Hi there - if you have a fridge, my local community center is in need of one - the Nyack Center in Nyack, NY - 25 mi north of NYC is a center that serves children and the whole community. It's nonprofit so you could probably get a nice tax deduction. Call Kim Cross at 845 358 2600 if you're interested. We could probably arrange a pickup depending on where you live.

Niff: I live in Manhattan, but unfortunately, Carolyn, it will be a couple of months before we rip out the appliances so it might be a while. Thanks for your input!

Try partnership for the homeless or Housing Works in NYC (although I don't think Housing Works will pick up):

Habitat for Humanity. They use the appliances and cabinets for both construction and resale. Also, their operation costs are low, so the donation actually goes to the needy, not to the charity itself.

I sold my fridge on Craigs List when I remodeled my kitchen ... price it reasonably and include a picture, and it will go very fast. I also put up a sign in my neighborhood and got responses from that
