Good Questions: Appliance Repair Resources?

Hello AT,

I am heartbroken! Running late this morning, trying to get to work, throwing in some laundry and swigging my coffee, I discovered that the machine suddenly would not work. Alas, my help-mate, my dearly beloved clothes-washing machine is on fritz.

Now I am at work and all I can think about is my dirty gym shorts molding in the broken machine. Do you know anyone I can call to fix this R2D2 of appliances? I live on the Upper East Side.

You have come to the right place. Even though we don't own a washer/dryer in this city (and GOD wouldn't it be nice if we did), we think we can help you. Here is a list of likely solutions in your area starting with Elgot on Lexington.
Elgot: They now do whole kitchens, but we have ordered and had fixed appliances by them.
Gracious Home: Says it does repairs as well.

Desco Appliance: Nice guys here. Only bought vacuums from them.

oh, i so sympathize. our washing machine recently started acting funny, and i obsessed all morning, too. luckily ours was self-fixable.

what kind is it? because i know general electric will send their own people out to fix. if you don't have a warranty, which it doesn't sound like you do, it will be more pricey, but try calling the manufacturer and ask who they recommend and find out what they will charge. they still might be competitive. can you call the retailer where you bought it? they could suggest someone also. rest assured though, it will be fixed, even though you might have to take your present load to the laundromat. GOOD LUCK.

my has been self-fixable in the past too. give the old girl a second chance when you get home. if it's not fixable, I've had luck with Major Appliance Svc (don't have a #, but they are out of Brooklyn).

i have a related q.
does anyone have a great resource for having oooold appliances re-wired?
i have my grandmothers marvelous old blender, but it really needs to be rewired
the plug is corroded, etc, etc
any help would be much much MUCH appreciated!

Have you checked your manual for troubleshooting? Is the drain filter clear? If it's not very old definitely check with the manufacturer or where you bought it for guidance first.

Oh yeah take the clothes out so they don't mold ;-)

My front end loader packed up after 5 years. The spindle holding the drum had snapped. The repairman spent 10 min. looking, said it wouldn't be worth fixing and charged $68.oo for the news. Dealers say that 5 yrs. is the average life expectancy for washers now. Demoralizing, but not as much as dirty socks. We have a new front end loader now.

I used Sears repair service a while ago (even though I didn't buy my appliances there), they did a good job but I can't remember what they charge to come out and look.

Maxwell is right - Rapid Repair Svcs is pretty darn good.

I can't help but wonder, however, why not just dry clean?!

My coffee stained shirts rest comfortable in my magikan trashcan until i'm ready to send it off to drycleaners ... 'cause machines are too high-maintenance and my magikan saves me space http://www.magikan.com!
