Good Questions: Are They Building a Skyscraper Next to Me?

2005_1_3_question mark.jpgHello AT,

I'm about to BUY MY OWN APARTMENT. Which is ridiculously exciting. It's really small, but so charming, with high ceilings, and big windows. And, looking at the coolest smallest apartment contest has been totally inspiring!

But here's the catch: the little church behind the building (111 4th ave), is being torn down. Which makes me think they are gonna build some huge building there, blocking my view! Any advice on how I can find this out?

Thanks! Kim

We knew there would be a good answer to this question, and we knew just who would know: Lockhart Steele of Curbed. As he is sitting on the couch about 10 feet away, we asked him, and before the words were out of our mouth he had already replied, "I will send you a Curbed post on that." However, it wasn't that easy and - being very busy at the moment - he had to beg off to do it later. When he does, we will post it. In the meantime, here is where we would go to look:

  • Property Shark
  • ACRIS: Online City Register
  • Department of Buildings

BTW, because - as Lock said in his launch post "...everything in New York City comes back to real estate, rent and the neighborhoods we live in" - curbed.com should be required daily (at least 50 refreshes a day) reading for anyone living in NYC.

I lived next door to a renovation/construction project for a year, and you don't want to be near them. Our block's "über-mansion" was consistantly behind schedule, and to make up for it they did work from 7am til sunset every day of the week. It's a lovely building, but I'll never do that again. Unless it's a huge bargain and you're willing to put up with it, there's another apartment out there for you with big windows and high ceiling.

For development info in any NY neighborhood - try the NYC Planning Information Portal...

as an urban planner, i would recommend you just call the planning department and ask about planned and proposed development in your neighborhood- this should all be public information, and hopefully you'll speak to someone who knows what's going on.
