Hey AT,
We are lucky enough to have a washer/dryer in our home. The problem we have, however, is that because the only place we can keep it is in the kitchen, we are left with a hideously unattractive area.
What could really make the difference is an excellent hamper. Do you have any suggestions? I absolutlely loathe wicker and anything wicker-ish.
Thanks and hope you can help, Brooke
Dear Brooke, Embarrassingly, we have never bought a hamper in our entire life, favoring hanging cotton bags and (now) built in situations, but we've seen some we like. We would go with stainless steel in a kitchen setting like this. This is where we would look:
The Usualy Suspects:
Container Store
this is a nice
Bed Bath & Beyond
Slatwood is a new take on wicker
Mxyplyzyk: Mix-ee-pliz-ick
STacks and Stacks has mod metal ones...
This one from VIPP is real nice, but pricey at $339.
I also hate wicker & had to keep a hamper in plain view (but in the bedroom). I had the complicating factor of cats who like to sleep in my laundry - so I needed a cover they could not move. I ended up with an octagon shaped painted wooden box with a lid from Pier One.
To steal a bit from HGTV one of the recent apartment dwellers showcased used a large decorative urn as a clothing hamper. It could likely be placed on a rolling base if needed and/or lined with a removable bag for convenience.
Try Hold Everything. Or Pottery Barn Bed & Bath.
And ideally a hamper should allow airflow, unless you do laundry almost daily.
Check out Umbra's toss cans (www.umbra.com). The Swish Can might work if you want something colorful. If you prefer stainless steel, there's the Grand Can Metal. Of course, there's a risk that guests will think it's a garbage can....
Try Simple Human which has stainless steel hamper with lid.
Kartell makes a great one in plastic, part of the Round-up series. You can get it on caster as well.
Our 26-month search for the perfect hamper actually ended at Hold Everything, of all places. I am a fan of wicker, but wanted something with a narrow weave and a nice finish -- most importantly, I had to find something narrower than 18" in diameter, which turns out to the be the greatest challenge. But we found our Lost Hamper of Eldorado at the Hold Everything store on the upper-east side -- check it out!
Hold Everything has a hamper on sale now called the Fairfield Hamper. It is wood with two tilting drawers and removable canvas inserts. Warm mahoghany or natural. Very "furniture" looking.
Crate and Barrel has a surprisingly sophisticated offering that's a little different than the standard wicker or stainless trash can hampers one usually sees.
