Good Questions: Bathroom Wall Help?

8-21-sinks.jpgHello AT,

My apartment's newly remodeled "modern" bathroom needs some help. The tub and floor tile is greyish-tan. I was thinking of doing dramatically dark walls and I'm unsure. Change the mirror? Any paint color or wallpaper ideas?

Thanks a bunch! CI

Dear CI,

We say go with your gut: try some dark colors on your walls so that the sinks and the counter top pop and the walls have more life. We'd experiment with dark neutral warm tones between the green of your sink, a warm grey that will tie in with the floors and tub or an aubergine that will bring out the color in your counter.

Anyone want to give CI a hand??

I think you should change the mirror into two rectangular mirrors. This will emphasize the porportion and appearance of the two sinks and might work to make the counter area look larger.

I also agree with the dark color...i recently painted my bathroom a dark color and it really made the lighter fixtures pop.

I'm feeling the dark color, too -- but if anyone puts on make-up in that mirror, make sure you have way more light than you think you need right now.

Switching to a pair of mirrors might give you an opening to change the lighting design, too. Also, think about what the mirrors reflect -- a more interesting color or dramatic bit of art on the reflected wall could tie the space together.

definitely get rid of that cheap developer, wall-mounted mirror and get 2 seperate matching mirrors with funky frames. That will add personality and warmth. I think a dark aubergine color would really be great and bring out the colors in the granite! Great sinks!

I would also get rid of the cabinet colour. Its kind of pasty next to the dark granite.

I love the idea of two separate mirrors also.

Benjamin Moore - Radiccio is a fabulous colour.

Curiously, do you live in Brooklyn? Either we have the same developer, they're brothers, or they shop at the same "modern" place.

Green! Leaf green, or bright yellow-green. I just think it needs some excitement!

Put cool door handles on, ditch the mirror for 2 smaller ones or a long one and put up sconces.

I'd watch what color you put in the bathroom. some greens might make you look really sick and unhealthy, and I doubt a purplish colour would do very well either.

I'd go with a lighter tone of whatever dark color you decide on. And I'd avoid a yellow-toned green. My suggestion is to find a golden-brown or buff that goes with the wood in the cabinet, and maybe could also be found in the granite? try these Benjamin Moore colors: Parchment (OC 78) Celery Salt (OC 136) Muslin (OC 12)

that's my two cents.

Thanks for all the great tips...you just don't know...I've been agonizing over it. I am digging the idea of two rectangular mirrors, deep warm grey color, and I'll incorporate the pOp via artwork in aubergine and greens on the mirror-reflected wall.

Location? Downtown Baltimore (I wish I was in Brooklyn). The developer for my place could use some tips. You should see the main living space. I swear, he installed over 30 recessed lights with a huge ceiling fan and a wacked out light fixture in the middle. But that's another picture.

Definitely dark.

I'd actually go as close to the color of the countertop as you can find. I think it will make the sinks' shapes stand out.

For another wall (what's to the left?) I'm also thinking of Timorous Beasties' insane "bullet" wallpaper. Click my name to see it.

The dual sink basins are cool. It's too bad the countertop isn't a color that makes them stand out. I agree with the first post -- dual mirrors will play up the dual sinks.

I would tile the background wall in aquamarine glass tiles.
