Good Questions: Bedroom Overhead Replacement?

12-16-cittra.jpgHello AT,

We currently have the Ikea Cittra quad spotlight in clear in our bedroom. It is on a dimmer but after a rather energetic duvet shakedown my husband has bent it completely out of shape.

We have decided to replace it and are willing to spend up to $300. Any ideas? We have a couple of bedside lamps but it's nice to have the overhead light if only to help us match our socks up when folding laundry! We've considered the Nelson bubble lamps. Any other ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks! Reef

I just bought a chandelier at Home Depot for $350 and it makes quite a statement in a modern bedroom. It looks really cool when on the lowest setting possible. Gives a nice soft glow.

I like Elizabeth's idea a lot. There are gorgeous chandeliers out there in lots of styles and depending on the style of your room you should have plenty of options.
If a chandelier isn't your thing perhaps a simple pendant lamp would do. In our bedroom we have the Le Klint lk172. It is made of very durable white PVC. My husband has knocked it pretty hard on a few occasions during "energetic duvet shakedowns" and it has remained unharmed.
I am a huge fan of the Nelson bubble lamps but have never owned one. It appears they are made of a self-webbing soft plastic. My guess is they are pretty durable but if I owned one I'm not sure I would want to put it where there was risk of rapidly moving bedding!
Good luck with your hunt!

Reef. I have a medium Nelson Saucer Pendant above my dining room table. It's pretty durable. I've knocked it around once or twice when rearranging furniture with no problems. But that particular Saucer style always "reads" dining room (or Googie diner) to me. If you were to go with a Nelson for above the bed, maybe you should consider either the Nelson Ball Pendant or Nelson Crisscross Pendant? Both seem more suited to a bedroom to me. (My first choice would probably be the Moooi Random Light. But it's twice your budget and it looks to be a little too delicate to withstand an accidental "duvet shakedown"!)

Thanks everyone,

Elizabeth- Although I'd love a chandelier the other half isn't a fan.

Erin- I really like Le Klint lk172 and it's good to hear it is sturdy.

Enrique- I know what you mean about the saucer pendant reading "dining room". That was my main concern with it. I love the criss cross pendant so maybe that's the one!

Thanks.

An Ikea Cittra on a dimmer? Doesn't the manual
specifically state not to do that?

Reef,

checking back in. Personally, I like the idea of the Nelson Bubble lamps hanging down over a bed - anything that doesn't show the bulb and casts an indirect light. One of the prettiest things we have seen was on SSBS where a couple hung a group of white ball pendants at diffferent heights over their bed. It was this episode (the first one)

the pendants were simple white glass balls on white cords. The overall effect was beautiful.

Thanks Maxwell,

I really like the idea of hanging several pendants at different heights. I remember seeing something in Met Home showing something similar some issues ago.

Oops...I didn't know that about the dimmer. We added the dimmer, not the light. I guess it's no bad thing that we're changing the light!

That's so funny... I searched the archive for this thread because I found a great pendant lamp that you might like--either singly or grouped. It isn't round, but has a groovy fluid early '60s shape. And at $33 each, it's worth considering.

(Oh yeah, it's IKEA. Imagine that, me suggesting something from IKEA...)
