Good Questions: Bedspread = Rug & Table + Spray Paint?

3-20-urban1.jpgHello AT,

I have two questions: can a bedspread be made into a rug and can this table be spray painted?

I LOVE Urban Outfitters. I had the pleasure of going to one of their stores the other day, I found this incredible since I had only seen their merchandise online...

3-20-urban2.jpg1. First, in regard to a rug, there are three criteria a rug must meet for me. Be cheap, easy to clean (i.e., machine washable) and have a simple pattern. A bedspread at Urban Outfitters matched this criteria. Could it be made into a rug?

2. Second, I love the shape of this table and the utilitarian material it is made of. I don't, however, like any of the patterns they offer. Can this table be spray painted? Its description says its an oilcloth table.

Thanks for any help provided! Peggy

Anyone?????

There was some chatter in the Nursery section about painting your own rug:

I would imageine you could take some of the same steps outlined in those links and voila! Rug!

table: i just looked at the description online:
"Smooth and durable powder-coated metal gives this pedestal side table a nice shine. Pretty Asian floral design. "

i would assume you could easily paint over it.

for the rug: wouldn't you have to have some kind of backing attached to the bedspread?

I think you could make a rug from that bedspread if it is a heavier weight cotton. You would still want to back it with a heavy weight interfacing or chair backing. I would then "frame" it with a heavier weight upholstery fabric - like velveteen or canvas even - so maybe a 4-6" border around the fabric. Take a look at Celine Dupuy's Sewing with a French Twist for a fabric sewn rug pattern and instructions you could probably adapt to this fabric.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but ...

I wouldn't count on the bedspread having enough substance to make much of a rug. I don't know how you could transform it into something heavier and keep it washable.

You can't spraypaint the table. Powder coated metal is too slick. You might be able to sand it enough to give the paint something to adhere to, but it will be a production. You might be able to find paint that is specifically designed to go on metal, or if you want to get fancy you can find an autobody shop and ask them to paint it for you.

I don't think that UO stuff is so well made that it is worth all that effort, though.

I think that fabric was featured on a chair in a Mitchell Gold several months ago. I've been looking for it.

ikeahacker had decoupaged a larger table and gave instructions, it looked like it might be similar to this. And they talked about the whole issue of priming it so it would adhere.....

The table ended up navy blue with stars all over it if your scrolling through their pictures. Find a picture you like and do it, i saw this table in store too, it looks super cute.

If you wanted to put the work into the fabric to make it a rug, I think it could be done (My motto is: if there's a will, there's a way)- but most rugs have scotchguard finishes to resist dirt - you could get that in an aerosol can, but I don't klnow if it's the same. Like someone said - you'd have to reinforce it with an interfacing and bind the edges. You might then attach that rubber no-slip stuff to the back. Perhaps there's something non permanent that adheres to floors to really stop rugs from slipping around?

Think about it. Walking on your bedspread? Maybe if you laminated it first. Then it would be a door mat. Seriously, don't waste your time. The table is nice and all, but you don't like it the way it is, so why not find one you do?

Homo Loquens, I saw that cherry blossom linen or something very like it yesterday at Crate and Barrel, in their custom upholstery rack. They had other Mitchell Gold fabrics, so I bet it was the same.

what if you made a top to go over the existing print...it could be a fabric with a plexiglass top cut to fit...or a fun round serving tray that could sit on top...or have a piece of wood cut to fit...just thinking because as stated above, I think you will have a hard time painted over this surface

Um, that table, minus the top design, is a basic round table, no?

Try Muji at the MomaStore.

But if hellbent on painting this table, assuming the top is not indeed *actual* oilcloth, I'm sure you can paint it after a sanding and using some high-adhesion primer.

You are forgetting that the UO table is only $30.00!! Hello??!

Home Depot sells a rug that is very, very similar to that cherry blossom bedspread. It looks much better in person than on the website--it's lovely and smooth and soft to the touch. My aunt actually bought it for her home and it looks great. That might be an easier option than trying to convert the bedspread! Click on my name to see the Home Depot link.

I love this fabric, I was thinking of purchasing it for some sewing fun to add to my sheets- maybe a pillow or two. As for a rug, all I have to say that Gretchen rocks! Peggy this is the perfect solution. AT users unite.

The AT community are my favorite bloggers! Thanks for the comments. Gretchen, I looked at the home depot rug and it is lovely, but it is $299.00 way out my price range unfortunately.

Honestly, I have not a small budget to decorate with, but NO budget to decorate with. If there were a contest for the coolest, cheapest I would win. Thank God for the curb and the Salvation Army.

Thanks for the comments, I probably won't bother with that table. Patrick (the other one) you are totally awesome. Thanks for turning me onto Muji. I didn't see a table, but there is an awesome shelf unit ($26.00!!!) that would work in tiny corner that is my office. I love the simple, utilitarian look of it.

ok - not a rug - but can you imagine one of those bedspreads as a sofa slipcover? is the fabric thick enough do you think? any ideas on HOW to do that?

I also LOVE this cherry blossom fabric...tried to click on the home depot link to see the rug...but it didn't work. Can you please post it again? :) Thanks!
