Good Questions: Best Bathroom/Kitchen Magazines?

2005_1_3_question mark.jpgHello AT,

What do you consider the best design publications for finding high end bathroom items? High end kitchen items?

Thanks, Keely

We don't subscribe to any specific magazines that deal with this area and go directly to stores for this type of thing. Nevertheless here are some magazine and store picks for high end bathroom/kitchen products:

Magazines:

  • Elle Decor
  • Dwell
  • Metropolitan Home
  • Vitals (new one we just saw this weekend...)

Stores:

Most shelter titles have a special Kitchen and/or Bath issue, so I'd start by looking in the archives for those.

And don't forego some of the less high-style titles, like Home. While I typically don't love Home's general room design sense, they do cover a lot of ground in kitchens and baths.

Better Homes and Gardens also publishes several specialty issues under their "Special Interest Publications" group. I'm sure they have Kitchens or Baths covered there.

Finally, try Renovation magazine, Canadian Home & Garden, and any issue of Interiors magazine that has a specila kitchen or bath section.

Living Etc. is great for ideas, but since they are UK based, many of the products they feature are difficult to get here.

If I were having a high-end kitchen done, I'd head to the UK's Smallbone of Devizes...

They did a gorgeous kitchen a few years back at the Kips Bay Designer Showhouse. They tend traditional, but the one they did at Kips Bay was sleeker than their typical.
If you want even sleeker, try Poggenpohl, or Arcilinea--

Go to Bond Bath on Lafayette and Bond
Lot's of high end modern stuff

website was bondbath.com and it was searchable but it's down at the moment.

I find Dwell the best magazine for ideas and relevant adverts.

Have you looked at Pure Contemporary? It's online at www.purecontemporary.com. They have great feature stories on high-end contemporary kitchens and baths plus, they have an extensive product guide, with loads of gorgeous things. Definitely worth taking a look!

Any suggestions for books and magazines on apartments and smaller homes? I've flipped through that "100 - 1,000 square feet" book. I also like Marco Pasanella's "Living in Style without Losing Your Mind", which is a more general interior design book.

When I was looking for ideas to redo the kitchen in my studio, I found very few "small" kitchens that were actually small, and some of them were the size of my whole studio. I did find lots of icky super-consumer advice, including a book that recommended buying two dishwashers so that you don't have to unload the clean one.

The April issue of House Beautiful is a kitchen issue. (oh, and the cover story of this month's Canadian House & Home is "Conquer the Clutter")

Check out the new book "Ultimate Bathroom Design" by Alejandro Bahamon, published by Te Neues. And this month's (April) Met Home has a "Delicious itchens and Dreamy Baths" feature.
