Good Questions: Birch Sapling Resource?

11-28-birch.jpgHello AT,

Any ideas as to where can I buy a cut birch sapling? I see them decorating the pages of magazines like December's Domino, and I would like one for the holidays but all of my googling has come to naught. I find birch logs but not the entire sapling. I'm hoping you or the AT readership can help.

Thanks! Reyniere (Pic by Nils)

Not sure about saplings, but I've purchased birch logs from a place called Tree Stem Creations. Incredibly customer service oriented.

Click on my name for the link.

Whoops, just saw the part where you said you can find the logs... but Tree Stem Creations may still be a resource.

If only my apartment could showcase something so grand...

The only resource I have (if you are in NYC) is the one place in the Flower District that seems to be THE SOURCE for anything cut from trees. Their name is U.S. Evergreen and they are on the corner of 28th and 6th (I think). As someone advised in an earlier entry, just don't ask too many questions and they probably will sell to you...You can probably look them up in the phone book and call and ask if they have any.

You may also inquire at my brother's goat farm in CT, but that would involve driving out there and marching through the woods with your own bow saw. And possibly stepping in goat poop.

I think it would be great to slowly enhance the AT listing of online plant/flower vendors. I am continually amazed at what you can click and order. If anyone knows where tree branches can be ordered from, I would love to know, too.

Holy crap! At $7.95 per 16-inch log, I bet I have burned about half a million dollars' worth of these things!

um... do you have a picture of what you have in mind? If it's less than at least an inch or so thick, you realize that it'll be dark brown, not white, right?

at least... that's how they grow up here.

You can try rolandsofcalifornia.com. They sell all kinds of decorative wood including whole cut white birch. They can also get things that are not on the website and they'll ship anywhere.

I've purchased large quantities of 8-10' white birch trees before for an installation from a floral wholesaler here in dc...another option if you want larger quantities and can get them to sell to you.

Second option above would be to try and find a local floral wholesaler in your area, that is.

Little Sarah and Ky T: thanks for those links! Incredible stuff!

Both of those online vendors look great! U.S. Evergreen would definitely not ship, so these are great resources for those that would need it shipped. I loved the kiwi vine and Mitsumata on the Nettleton Hollow website! I will definitely add them to my bookmarks :)

Matt,
We got the tree from Fisher and Page in the wholesale flower market in NYC. It was about $30 and I doubt they ship. But if you want to call: 212 645 4106. We didnt have a national source which is why we didnt credit it. But if there is a flower market in your area, you might find one, or you could try asking a local florist shop to order one for you. Probably will be more expensive.
