Hi AT, I know you have posted a few items about the freestanding Eco Smart alcohol
fireplaces, which are super cute but super expensive at around $6,000 or so. Does anybody know how these much less expensive fireplaces from Blomus compare? The one in the picture is listed for around $1600. Thanks! Jennifer

I was doing research on gel fireplaces awhile ago. Here is my complete list...have fun.

You know, I've always wondered if these fireplaces were safe for apartment living. Do they meet fire code? Anyone have experience with them?

Thanks for all the links to your research, Coristyle. Did you end up getting one after all? I was told the Eco Smart meets San Francisco code for multi-unit dwellings but I don't know about the Blomus.

I've always wondered about these gel things as well. I mean, do they give off heat or are they just eye candy?

We carry them in our store, so I know a bit about them. They run on denatured alcohol and come with a guide for how long you can burn them in rooms of different square footage before they replace all the good air with toxic air, but it's generally longer than you'd ever think to use it anyway.
They put off a tiny amount of heat in the immediate area they are used, but are mostly for ambiance.
Some brands of denatured alcohol are more colorful while burning, we've found. (We like Klean Strip brand.)
As for fire code, I think they're basically considered a large candle.

Grrretchen, where is your store? Are you in the SF Bay Area by any chance? I'd like to check one of these out in person.

Scratch that about Klean Strip... that's the one that we DON'T like. :)
The one that provides a more colorful flame is ALLPRO, available at Cloverdale/Rodda.
JTaylor... we're in Bellingham, WA. A short plane ride away on Allegiant! we're working on getting all our stock on our website though: www.digsshowroom.com
