Good Questions: Bookcase In The Picture?

3-9-ikeashelf.jpgHello AT,

This is just a shot in the dark, but I was wondering if you could point me in the direction of where to find a bookcase like the one in the pic I've attached, taken by one of your contributors "Jennifer and David...." 2/28/07. (The black open - back bookcase in the foreground with the printer on it.) I've tried Ikea's website, Amazon, eBbay and a few others, it just seems to be elusive. Maybe Ikea stopped making them? Anyway, thanks for any help you may be able to provide.

Thanks, Ben

Dear Ben,

Without a doubt that would be the Ikea Expedit Series, but we see that this particular configuration is missing from the online store - WE JUST FOUND IT. It is a classic.

We don't know who designed it originally, but the Conran shop has the finely made high, priced version: Rolly Shelving, but this is the full size. Each one is based on a cubic design.

Anyone else?

Ikea - Expedit

I have one in white, not bad piece for the price, $89.99.

if you click around the options (on the ikea link), i think it's the model that 58 5/8" x 31 1/8.. just on the long side. click on my name to see the image and just imagine it on it's side...

I think West Elm had a similar one at one point as well.

I've definitely seen this at West elm. they call it rolling shelving. unlike the expedit its open on both sides. really nice either as book shelf, or room divider...

The Expedit is also open on both sides. I have it in "beech effect."

I just bought that bookcase in white from West Elm! It comes in black and some other color and I am so pleased with mine. It was relatively easy to assemble too.

Ikea's website just sucks. You can get a similar piece at Ikea, if not THE piece. Effektiv, indeed.

If it has casters, then it's the West Elm piece, but if the price difference is enough you can always put casters on the Ikea piece if you wish.

The furniture is most definetly Ikea - Expedit. Not only do i own that exact piece, but i remember this persons home tour and they had expedit's in other sizes as well.

Hi Ben, yes that shelf in our office is from Ikea, the Expedit Series. We happened to stumble upon it at the store near Boston - though I have seen similar white ones at West Elm.

They have this exact type at the uk/europe store chain Habitat. It's called Magna. I heard somewhere that it was owned by the same group as the Conran store, so they may possibly have it there also like someone here said.

BTW their site is great: www.habitat.net

I added legs to the same expedit bookcase to make a landing strip (see link in name)...you can also get casters from Ikea, and legs of different heights. LOVE mine, I do!
