Good Questions: Bookshelf Headboard Options?

1-30-headboard-shelf.jpg

Hello, This headboard/bookshelf is something I've been looking for, do you know where I can get either this particular bookshelf or something like it that would fit well behind a bed? Thanks!

Prepac makes some that I considered for a while in a number of colors, and they're pretty affordable. I've heard they're study (for particleboard) as well.

If you go Ebay and search for book case headboards, they have a variety of styles, materials and prices. Some of them are from prepac, some are laminate or engineered wood, one fo the more expensive ones is cherry..

Hit up the thrift!

Go right to your local thrift shop. That way you can see the goods in person and measure it for the right proportions. Large furniture items like this show up in thrift stores every day, so be persistent and you'll find a bookcase that suits your needs. Just make sure that the shelves will be secure when you tip it on its side. Avoid ones with bracketed shelves.

Thrift is best. That way you can measure the piece and make sure the proportions are correct. Make sure, though, that the shelves are sturdy and will hold up when you tip the piece. Stay away from bracketed shelves for this purpose.

I didn't have room behind my bed for anything, and side tables would only block my windows, so I used a couple Ikea Lack shelves above for storage. Within reach, but high enough / not deep enough to interfere with heads. Depending on your style of...well, you know.

Also try Craigslist -- I can't speak for your area, but down here in Virginia, a lot of bookcase headboards (usually from waterbeds) show up.

That doesn't look like an actual headboard to me---I think it's a bookcase with the bed pushed up against it.

You could do something like an Expedit unit (from IKEA) and then put the bed in front of it for a similar look. The taller one (here) placed on its side might be most similar to this look, but you could use the taller one for a more dramatic headboard. You'd lose easy access to the cubbies behind the bed, but you could use that space for long term storage of small stuff or off-season clothes.

I've got no idea about this particular one. But for bookshelf headboard options in general, you could see my blog post on the subject.

I've had a bookshelf headboard for years - good place to store things you want in bed. We keep a small clock stereo (that also plays cds) on ours along with some of our favorite books and cds...plus two small lamps on top on either side since only one side of the bed has a nightstand and it's small.

I like the idea of using the Ikea Expedit bookcase. But I have a higher than normal queen size bed so I'm thinking of setting the bookshelf on bricks so it will rise above the top of the bed. Any one have any thoughts if this might work?

Am I the only one who likes to read in bed. How does one prop the pillow on a bookcase?
