Good Questions: Can the Paulistano and Tom Vac Go Together?

7-3-chair-face-off.jpg

Hello AT,

I am looking for advice on whether the Paulistano chair in white could work in a room with the Tom Vac chair (which I already have and LOVE). ...

Are these two chairs (one plastic, one leather) too different to sit together? please help before I pour my life savings into a mis-matched living room!

thanks, julie

Dear Julie,

We put our vote in first. We said yes. If you like them both and they're both comfortable, AND you are going for a more eclectic, modern look, then you have no problem. The only thing we would question is whether of not you should do both chairs in white... It might tie them together too much, be too uniform and feel a little antiseptic. We don't know the rest of your interior, but we'd look hard at mixing with the black Paulistano to add punch and liveliness, if you have a white, modern interior.

Anyone else??

I answered no, only because I think the two chairs are too similar to each other (esp if both done in white). I was picturing them looking like broken versions of each other, but I suppose it would depend more on placement than anything else.

I answered no, only because I would notice how different the chairs were, while at the same time trying to look the same and that would bother me a lot to have those 2 chairs in one room...

Is one in seating are, one in a dining area?

If function divides them, I think they are good.

If function divides them, I think they are "too close" and "not close enough."

Oops, second one should read "If function does *not* divide them.."

I think if you had two of each, placed in pairs on opposite sides of a room, it could work.

I answered NO -> even if the chairs look similar they belong to different worlds... the idea of seeing them in the same room gives me an instant eczema.

I probably wouldn't want to see them next to each other, but why not? One is more a sit-up chair and the other a sit-back chair. If you sit in them differently, you function in them differently.

Both cant totally work. I say discard all rules for pieces you love. I'm picturing a neutral room with bright accents.. or a crazy colorful room with these two chairs as color voids.

oops, I didn't see that you wanted them both in white. So I voted yes, thinking they'd be in different colors, but both in white -- that would look like you were trying too hard to match them. In different colors, I think they look funky and great together.

When I completely agree with someone, I tend not to say anything to not be redundant.

In this case, I pretty much agree with P2's entire post. However, other than hoping that the function of these chairs being different, I can also almost imagine some other way to mix them together that would involve specifically acknowledging each of their textures elsewhere in the room, and thereby aligning them to strongly with those other pieces that it helps create a clearer contrast between them.

For instance, if there is a larger leather piece, or, for instance a piece of artwork, like, say a black-and-white photograph of a crumpled piece of paper, or something that would acknowledge the textural quality of the leather, and something else that has some kind of pristine surface, and some kind of radial symmetry that echoes the Tom Vac chairs, that might help make it seem a little less like a near-miss.

Oh... also... if every single stinkin' thing in the room was all about white, just anyway... then that could help make them work together, but you'd still need to separate them some kind of way.

In the same small room the two chairs undercut each other's simple gorgeousness. You can't keep on getting one of everything or your place will look like a DWR sample sale.
