Hello AT,
I've recently developed a taste for making my own greeting cards, but haven't perfected the fold. Does anyone know of a machine I can use at home that will create that professional ridge/fold in the card!
Thanks for any help you can offer! karen

How many cards do you make? you can create a very professional looking fold by using something called a bone folder. typically made from plastic rather than bone, it looks like an oversized emery board with a point on it. You can get one at any of those fancy paper stores (in boston we have PaperSource-- don't know what the NYC equivalent would be. alternatively, you can use a table knife.
The main thing is not to fold against the grain. Try folding a piece of heavy paper in two perpendicular directions and you'll see what I mean.
You could also try a bone folder, such as this one:

(I think that's what Martha recommends using.)
You should check out Talas on West 20th Street. (They have a website - talasonline.com) They have a really comprehensive collection of bookbinding materials, and a lot of different sorts of bone folders. If you go there, they are all very knowledgeable and helpful.
P(2) mentioned something on that open thread called scor-it...do a web search. It looks very cool and he swore by it.
a-m, when you say "Martha", do you mean That Martha? nice to know she and I are in agreement on the subject of bone folders.
you only need a bone folder and you may also be able to get one at central art supply on 3rd avenue and 11th street.
Bone file! Score before folding ANYTHING always.

karen--
YES!!!!! I know of THE perfect thing...
it's called Scor-it... scorit.com (or click my name for the site)
A deceptively simple gadget that makes scoring cards an absolute breeze. (Once scored, the cards almost fold themselves).
I also make my own holiday cards, and the task would have been BRUTAL without this thing.
Oh, I am so $@%#%&! excited to be able to recommend this to someone!! You made my night!!!
we've always used the closed handle end of a scissors in this underfunded art department...the bone folder sounds like a perfect solution...but if you are going into some production you can spend $605.99 at www.machine-solution.com (Martin and Yale) for a friction fed machine...my next stop our Graphics department for multiple jobs
Wear gloves to keep smudges off the cards while you're folding them. (I learned this the hard way.)
Try this website for card scoring tools:

Does anyone know where I can purchase a needle vice tool ( for use doing paper pricking) I live in the UK.
