Good Questions: Carrie's Leather Chair?

12-5-carrie.jpg
Hello AT,

I have a good n' cheesy question: I'm in love.

I've fallen in love with the big leather armchair that Carrie buys from Aidan, her furniture designing boyfriend, in Sex and the City. The arms are wide dark wood, plenty of room to balance an oversize mug of tea. The leather is worn and weathered looking, since Aidan tells Carrie he pulled the leather from an old pullman car. Where can I find a chair like this? Or, if I were to commission someone to build it for me, how much could I expect to pay?

Thanks, Rebecca A.

Dear Rebecca,

If we're not mistaken, this is a mission-style adaption of the leather club chair. Therefore, we would start looking in these places:
Scott Jordan
Mission Living
Barn Furniture
Target's even got one in a rocker for $399
Strictly Wood Furniture

Anyone else???

It's just a mission-style chair... You should google images of Stickley chairs and get an idea of the varieties they come in and then find the suppliers of knock-offs.

Some originals are affordable, but the good ones cost a fortune. Some incarnations of Stickleys are not made by Chas. Stickley, but by Stickley Bros. The level of detail to such chairs can also dictate the value.

There are a few dealers in NYC also. Some real experts. There's an indoor antique showroom in Chelsea near the flea market that has one such expert on the lower floors.

I inherited a Stickley Bros. Rocker at one time and sold it on Craigslist about a year ago for about $150, what two dealers told me would be a fair price forthat particular piece. It had fabric upholstery, but brown leather is a great choice also. Check out craig and ebay.

There was a fabric/upholsterer place on Reade Street, near church, on the south side of Reade... They had a Mission rocker with brown leather in the window... but that was two years ago. I could find the name of the place.

My Uncle has a mission-style recliner... not very authentic, but comfortable.

don't know where you are geographically or better yet, how far you'll go to get it, BUT there is a great antique store in New Hope, PA that is very mission-centric. The owner would probably even look for that chair for you if you forwarded the pic. He is incrediably kn owledgeable about the period. If you are in the NYC area, its worth the drive.

let me know and i'll ask my friend what the store is called. (I'm not a mission style fan myself, but I've been to this store that I'm talking about with a friend/phanatic.)

EJ Audi has lots of Stickley furniture, but it's very pricey:

I'm loving the coffee table in the photo. Can anyone tell me about the designer?

Jennifer

You may want to try:

I don't think it's the same, but it's a lightweight version of what's seen in Carrie's unit.

(I really miss SATC.)

Yeah, it's the coffee table I'm crazy about! The one in Room and Board is nice but not the same. And a bit pricey.

SATC is on every night at 11PM on Ch. 11 and every Tues and Wed. nights on TBS.

The coffee table was built specifically for the set of SATC. If you follow the original link, you can read about creating the interiors for the show, and they describe building it.

btw, the original chair used for the set was auctioned off after they shot the final episode, and went for $11,000!!!

The coffe table was made especially for the show by the set designer according to the People magazine Sex and the City special issue (it had pictures and info on all the women"s apts). I've always loved the table and keep hoping someone will make a knock off.

Wow - i just looked at the HBO SATC site and read all about the apartments. Of course my favorite pieces in each apt were constructed by set designers. Unattainable is a little more comforting than unaffordable, I guess.

That's a MORRIS chair, folks. Very, very popular back in the day. Whit MacLeod makes nice ones http://whitmcleod.com/oak/chairs.html

Jennifer, what's the link you saw about SATC apts. I can't seem to find it.

A friend of mine recently purchased a similar chair from Ethan Allen. He didn't opt for leather cushions, but that's might be an option.

Ugh! Junk made in China. Never!!!

Justin,

You'll get over it.

Anti-Justin

P.S. and no it's NOT a Morris chair. A discerning consumer like you should be able to see the back is different, it's higher, square, and much uglier than the SATC chair.
