Good Questions: Cheaper Butcher Block Table Alternative?

(Note: Include a pic of your problem and your question gets posted first.)

2005_8_10_cucina.jpgHello AT,

Do you know where i might be able to find a decent kitchen butcher block table for food prep (36" height) without paying a fortune for a Boos model?

IKEA used to carry a style i liked but they've since discontinued it. i need it to be open around the sides so i can sit at it and do other tasks (like eat?) with my knees underneath the table rather than butting up aginst the closed sides of the IKEA island I currently have (which, BTW, came with the apartment-- not my choice).

prefer depth greater than 24", less than 40" and width of about 36-42". does anything come to mind? thanks so much! Nick

Dear Nick, We feel your pain and Ikea has always been the best bet for a low price. They still have this one, The Bevkam, which isn't bad at all. This one doesn't work for you? Other than that, here is a list of good places to look, but no silver bullets. MGR

I picked up my kitchen cart/island thingie at the local hardware store. They have a modular product called InterMetro, which is sold at several stores, including the Container Store. I was able to build a long, narrow cart on wheels with a lower shelf and a wood top for less than $200. It's not the sexiest solution, but the price was right.

Looks like the URL was stripped from my post. Anyhow, go to the Container Store's Web site, search on "InterMetro" and then click on "Components." It should yield three pages of parts that you can buy to build your own cart.

You can also get good prefinished maple butcher block work surfaces from industrial supply companies like MSC (http://mscdirect.com) and Grainger (http://grainger.com). That's what we used for our kicthen counters, much cheaper than Home Depot or similar.

Get one that's the right size, then mate it to a Metro wire cart, or even an industrial rolling tool cart.

I got my kitchen island/butcher block from kitchencarts.com, it seems to have the best prices (it had the same ones they sell on target.com, but for about 100 dollars less).

Have you tried K-Mart? Martha Stewart has a great kitchen work table for only $199.00+ the drawers open from either side. I absolutely love mine!

Well if anyone stumbles across this page as I did when I was looking for a really good, but inexpensive food prep table, I think I've really found the best option.

I've found a company called Restaurant Equippers (http://www.equippers.com) out of Columbus, Ohio that supplies solid, quality commercial food prep tables at wholesale prices. And trust me when I say WHOLESALE, I mean WHOLESALE!

You can choose Maple or Stainless Steel tops, 30" wide in any length from 3' to 6'. Prices range from about $130 to $300. And if you can deal with a "scratch and dent" model you can get a solid commercial grade food prep table for under $100.

It may not be as pretty as the kitchencart.com stuff, or as "homey" as the stuff from Target or Martha Stewart, but for quality, price, and sheer usefulness, you just can't beat it!
