Good Questions: Cherner Chair Knockoff for This Desk?

2-16-parsonswestelm.jpgHello AT,

I just bought a new desk from West Elm (the Parsons desk in white laquer) b/c I'm revamping my bedroom/work space, but I'm having trouble finding a chair that will not only work well with the overall look for the room, but will also be somewhat affordable.

I've had my eye on the walnut Cherner chair from DWR for a while but at $649 it's kinda pricey. Do you know where I might find a similar style or knock-off? Also, instead of the wood grain, do you think a white laquered chair would work as well or is that too boring? Please help!..

My current chair is a rickety old dining chair that I was going to re-upholster & refinish but never completed the project. It may collapse at any moment!

Thank youuuuu! Paola

Dear Paola,

Good question. A little contrast will undoubtedly add some pop to your room, but an all white interior could also be lovely and more fitting for your bedroom. We'd stay white if you go with any other chair but Cherner.

As for the chair, there is nothing like the Cherner chair and if you spring for it, you won't regret it AND you'll have it forever. AND if you do do it, may we suggest Stella Orange instead of walnut just to complicate things even more?

For a more affordable option, we'd first look at eBay, Apartment Therapy Classifieds or Craigslist for an older Cherner or a Jacobsen ANT chair, or simply stick with IKEA or West Elm.

Or how about this:

I use one of the Eames Eiffel Plastic Side Chairs in white as my desk chair. I have a whole dining set, so really it's stolen from the dining room table (until guests come over).

The molded desk chair at West Elm looks nice though, if you're looking for cheaper.

If you love the walnut Cherner chair from DWR, I wouldn't hesitate to save the money and buy one. It's a classic piece that will retain value if you decide it's not right and want sell it later.

I gotten a few older versions of these over the years at much lower prices. Try looking on ebay under "plycraft." You can usually pick one up for around $250.

Second the eBay suggestion, and also suggest checking out whiteonwhite (dot) com. They sell well-constructed impostors of the classic Eames et. al. designs for pretty decent prices. Maybe not West Elm decent, but they're a heckuva lot cheaper than DWR.

my friend uses the clear louis ghost chair with this desk and it looks great.

Quick question - I was thinking about getting that desk as well but am not near a WE store... are you happy with the quality? Is it pretty solid?

Thanks!

I agree with the e-bay suggestion, there are some really reasonable vintage knockoffs that are in good shape on there. But I would forego whiteonwhite.com, they're a nightmare! Worst return policy ever - no refund, store credit only, and you only get 1 week to make a return. The best part: if you're returning it because of "aesthetic" issues (a.k.a. crappy), you only get a store credit for 75% of what you originally paid. I will never use them again! Get what you love from a reputable company, and at least you're semi-protected on e-bay...

I was amazed at how comfortable Room and Board's "Jake" chair was, and while it's not the Cherner, it has great lines. Link in my name or http://tinyurl.com/yphxuv.

For $79, it could at least tide you over while you save for the Cherner!

Best of luck - let us know what you decide!

I vote against white, unless you are going whole hog with an all-white look.

For that desk, and with a similar to Cherner sensibility, I vote for any number of the Arne Jacobsen Ant chair variations around, of which helloat's suggestion of the Jake is one.

But the Cherners ARE lustworthy, so if you *can* afford it, I say go for it... you'll have it forever.

Check the link in my name for a chair advertised on eBay as an Anne Jacobsen bent plywood chair with bent plywood legs. It is very similar to the Cherner chair you were looking at. Good luck!

Hi, after a hellish interaction with one quite well-regarded furniture company recently, I've decided to post to this list about www.accurato.us. I just order four Cherner chairs from them and their customer service was amazing (buy four and ask for a discount!) It wasn't just just price (a discount over a price already lower than DWR), the follow through was excellent, and the chairs actually came early. Having just furnished an entire apartment from scratch (first "real" one and I wanted a few really good things to sparkle amidst the Ikea!), accurato.us was a dream. I almost fell for a few scam sites, but these guys were the real deal and they sent me a discount coupon after my first purchase too. If only I still had money to get something else!

Anyway, the Cherner's are fabulously comfortable, despite the lack of upholstery (you can get it upholstered but I like the original). If you love the chair and it's not on Ebay, try these guys for authentic Cherner chairs!

Oh one other thing. DWR only has walnut. Accurato has the full line. I got the walnut seat with black arms/legs but somewhere else on AT I saw the orange ones and I wish I had the color scheme for it!
