Good Questions: Cleaning Upholstery?

2005_1_3_question mark.jpgREMINDER: All questions that come with pics will be posted first, so get out your camera before you email....

Hello AT,

Any suggestions for something to clean upholstery? ...not a service, but a cleaner I could use myself ? I understand I should avoid using anything water-based, but I haven't found any specific cleaners.

Thanks for any suggestions! BW

I have a steamer, which I can use with an upholstery attachment. Of course, that does involve water. I don't know of a way to clean non-leather upholstery with anything besides a solvent with a water base or a steamer with a cleansing agent added to the water reservoir. Steamers do extract the fluid, so you're not left with something completely wet.

The best option is really to have someone come in and do it, because then you're not stuck with equipment you'll have noplace to store.

I've had great luck cleaning my upholstery using "Dryel" sheets that are for 'home dry cleaning'. I spot test on the back of the furniture first, but I haven't had a piece yet that it didn't work on. I got a chair from a vintage place that was pretty grubby and a couple of sheets and some elbow grease later it's in great shape.

I once used a foaming upholstery cleaner on a chair. It worked very well.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll try the foaming cleaner on the back and see how it goes.
