Good Questions: Cleanup Help in Forest Hills?

Hello AT,

Help!

Yesterday's heavy rain caused flooding in the basements of an entire block of houses (and maybe more) in Forest Hills, where my elderly mother lives.

There's a foot of water sitting in her basement and I am in California, feeling frustrated that I can't help...

So I'm hoping the AT community can recommend resources for the two kinds of help she needs, and RIGHT AWAY:

1, a service that provides HAZMAT clean-up (she is worried about the possibilities of sewage or fast-growing mold), and

2., a licensed contractor who can pour a new cement floor.

Does anyone out there have resources to recommend?

~Lisa

Dear Lisa,

We expect that this help will be fairly local so were throwing it out to the crowd. However, if you need industrial strength, the person to go to is Ron Alford at Disaster Masters.

Both ServPro and Service Master are national companies that franchise locally.

When the DC area flooded last summer, we were told to call as many places as possible and to get in their queues--it was better to maximize your chances of a quicker response. We ended up getting help from a ServPro team in Tennessee -- they had called in teams from all along the East Coast to help deal with everyone affected.

The bad news of course is that water and whatever else will continue to cause damage until help arrives. But the good news is that these folks have seen everything and can clean it up even if it's been several days or more.

has she spoken to The Office of Emergency Management? They MIGHT provide services (or at least advice) for her. Here's something from their website:

Residents affected by August 8's severe weather can call 311 (TTY: 212-504-4115) for assistance with alternate housing and building assessments. Bay Ridge residents who have incurred damage from the storm can go to a reception center at Public School 314, which is staffed with representatives offering housing assistance. For information on mold and flooding, view the Health Department's fact sheets.

Thank you both! Service Master is heading over there right now. When they are done with the clean-up, my mother will need help rebuilding. Does anyone out there know of a licensed, experienced small scale contractor who can put in a new floor (concrete), pull down a wall, and rebuild the ceiling as well?

I'm in the vacinity of your mother/grandmother's place.
I just had some work done in my bathroom very minor in comparison to what you need. I had water damage to my cieling and wall over the tub from the tenants above but the contractor gutted out their bathroom and replaced plumbing, wall, the works in 1 week and then came down to work on my place. He did my place in a couple of hours (plastering, sanding and painting). He's very fast, efficient, quite, polite and cleans up after himself. The name is Heron Construction, Tel# 718-450-1851 website: www.HeronConstruction.net. He is licensed and insured and does just about anything you need and will provide a free estimate. Let him know that Sallie referred him to you. Good luck.

Does she have renter's insurance? If so, she can have someone come out and take a look at the damage. Insurance may cover it. If she still needs a licensed contractor, have her call this guy, Conley Cheng. Really competent, really nice and very honest. He's done work for me in the past and I would recommend highly recommend him.

Good luck!
