Hi Apartment Therapists,
I've acquired a lovely but heavy 4' x 6' pane of glass that i'd like to eventually use as a tabletop. Where can I find a modern (and possibly inexpensive) table base? Is
Room & Board my best option?
danke in advance, d
Dear D,
Room & Board is definitely the only shop we know that is affordable, easy to shop from and offers bases only. "Bases only" is not a typical store product. That said, we have recently purchased a base from Desiron and had it's dimensions customized. Very nice, but more expensive.
Other places to look. We would look online at Craigslist and eBay (search for "coffee table"), see what you find and ask to buy the base only from the seller. They probably won't mind.

If you are creative and into the thrill of the hunt check out at the flea market on 25th Street in the garage in New York City. It sounds vague but there is a website. You could search NYC fleamarkets - it is pretty well known. You have to get there early because modern dealers are out VERY early! I love listening to the different languages be spoken by visitor too. Good Luck.
Following on Kate's post, I've seen table bases on ebay. Also, what about using some non-traditional things? Like architectural salvaged things. Depending on the size, you could get really creative.
Try www.overstock.com , saw some nice table bases there a few days ago.
I looked up the flea market website for you: http://www.hellskitchenfleamarket.com/
Eurway.com has a small selection of bases...
I made my own coffee table base out of prefab concrete chimney blocks. I used two and they only cost a few bucks each. I painted them gloss black. I believe they look great. They look very similar to the cube 2nd from the bottom at this link:

What about this? Inexpensive and could work with mid-century.

If you have a good piece of glass, I would NOT squander this chance to have something truly interesting and unique with a pre-made base!
Create something! Be on the lookout for wonderful things that would make great bases! Go that garbagescout.com site and see if anything on there says hello.
I found a WONDERFUL coffeetable base about 10 years ago on the street when I lived in Hell's Kitchen, and did something fun with a top, but the place that had it for sale lost their lease and no longer had showroom space and I had no space for it, but one of the guys wanted it for the base alone, which he used in collaboration with his new beau, the famous Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz, and I've seen that thing in more than one magazine spread where they've recycled that thing over and over.
Oh, but another thing I must say is that measurement you give it sounds like it's rectangular, right? If so, those corners need to be softened some kind of way so no one gets a sliced knee.
I've been thinking that these vases from West Elm would be great turned upside down and used to prop up a coffee table... maybe with a little glue.
The link below doesn't show the one I mean - the one in the store is a really massive rectangular metal vase.

Ian Mclean seems to have gone missing, as he doesn't respond to emails or phone calls. His website is still up, but I wonder if he has gone out of business.
