Good Questions: Color Suggestions for Doors & Frames?

6-10-paint-trim-grey.jpg

Hi Apartment Therapy, I've just finished painting an accent wall in my bedroom Black Fox by Sherwin Williams. I LOVE the color, but now the original white doors and frames are bothering me. My bedroom furniture is black and the rug and bedding are solid white. Does anyone have some good color suggestions for painting these doors? I'm stumped! Thanks so much! Adrienne
ps - the other bedroom walls are Cottage Cream by Sherwin Williams

I think they look good white, but a lighter shade of grey or cream would look good.

I agree about color. I think orange would be outstanding!

RED! Go for bold, rich color! Don't be afraid of it!

if you don't want to go bold with them, I would suggest painting the trim white to match your furniture and the doors the color of your other walls.

I agree with the comment of grey, and please paint the doors, frames and the kickboard same color. At least lets say you will paint the doors a shade of grey, then you can do the frames a tone darker grey, to get closer to the black you painted the walls. I personally would do the same color door and frame, but some people prefer to have a distinction. ALSO, look into changing the switch and plug plates and the actual switches. You need a darker color now and no shiny plates, they compete with the clock you have on the wall. It is all in the details

My vote: Go with a semi gloss Decorators white. Make a statement with your "stuff" and not with doors and molding.

What you need to do with the doors is to get rid of them. They're mismatched, and, as I recall in pictures from your previous post about this space, there's a lot going on in the loft space above this wall, increasing a look of busy-ness. Even if you just replaced the fussy, traditional bifold door with a plain one, it would be a vast improvement. Agree with lilalcarese that glossy black--the deepest, darkest black possible--would look good. Would also coordinate with the black ladder to the loft. The Black Fox wall is yummy.

TOTALLY go for orange. A bright pop of Orange against that charcoaly gray will be amazing. See all of CB2's catalogues for examples. And I'd leave those base boards white.

Orange will be like Halloween in your bedroom all year long! yipppeeeeee!

No, but seriously... paint everything the same color as the wall. You wanted a Black Fox accent wall so really make it a Black Fox accent wall.

I would have to agree with the semi-gloss and not glossy but in black.. and if you could afford doors, it would be nice to have ones that do match, but I like the look of the paneled doors on that wall, it gives it a more sculptural look. That Black Fox paint is such a stunning color! Good Luck with whatever you choose!

Same color as the wall and change out the raised panel doors to plain doors.

I love the Black Fox wall!

I'd paint the doors, and the door molding, the same Black Fox color. Then paint the baseboard molding an intermediate color like a darkish warm grey, so it is a transition between the wall and the floor rather than a contrast. (maybe even paint the molding in the rest of the room as well, trim does not have to be white) Lastly, I'd change out the switchplate cover and the wall plugs to something that is also very dark, perhaps oiled bronze.

The way it is now,the white is highlighting your doors and the other non-black bits, which while not offensive, are also not anything spectacular. By making the rest of that wall dark, and possible the rest of the trim, it will allow your artwork and bedding and rug to be the focal point, as well as the accent wall.

I'd paint the doors and trim black to match the walls, and I'd ditch the candle thing.

I'd go with a grey, a few tones lighter than what's on the walls. I agree about matching up the trim and changing out the switchplates, too.

I'm in the grey camp, 50-60% of the wall. Although, black could be interesting......

I'm with these guys - go for red if you want a serious pop of color. It looks smashing with grey and cream - sort of like a fifties illustration.

The same shade of white as the mouldings and trim around the room.

I would at least paint the trim and baseboards the same color as the walls.

Right now it looks like she is wearing white sneakers with her black evening dress.

The door to the left should be the same color as the walls. I would say paint the other door either a warmer white or the same color as the walls.

That candle thingy really needs to go away.

Since the doors aren't matched, and they're not interesting architecturally, I'd paint both the doors & the accompanying door trim the same color as the walls. Let them recede and allow any artwork you put on the column (or 'bump') to predominate. I'd leave the baseboard white.

I would go all bright white on the trims, mouldings and doors. it would definetely bring out the beautiful color you have on the wall. If color is needed, i would go with the faintest off white in whatever color is dominating the rest of elements in your room.

Another important thing, if posible, is try to unifiy the design of the doors. Just that factor would bring the whole ensemble to another level.

thanks for all of the ideas! I agree that the candle thing is awful and needs to go, so it's going tonight! I would LOVE to get new doors, but we'll have to see what my budget says. aaaand now I have lots to think about!

my first instinct would be red, but that's more my style and i recognize that it's not for everyone. also, i see that there's a beige-ish wall right there and that would not work with red.

another look that would be great would be to paint the doors and trim a medium gray. if you can't afford to replace one or both doors, you should change the handle on the closet door so it more closely matches the handle on the main door.

I would go with a light avocado color (something like Sherwin-Williams 6711 Parakeet), similar to the "the kitchen" heading at the bottom left of this page. Paint the trim and mouldings white or ivory white.

Depends on the look you want. Personally I would go bright, like pink, aqua or yellow. If you want a more nuetral palette, gray would work. Or paint the trim & both doors very very white. Either way, the doors will look better if painted to match.

The mismatched doors would drive me crazy! I'd remove the bifold doors and replace them with a curtain. I'd pick a large bright print. Or if you need it to balance with the other door, replace it to match.

I love the white trim against the dark gray wall, but I'm not sure it is working to integrate the cream walls in the room. Maybe leave the white trim on the gray wall and paint the trim on the cream wall gray?

Definitely agree with those who say red. I painted my kitchen walls in a similar color (Benjamin Moore's Dragon's Breath) and, with white cabinets the red backsplash/pots/utensils look fantastic. I'd keep the trim and even doors white and get some red accents in there. Another color that is working well in my kitchen is a tiny bit of mustard-yellow.

Red Red Red Red! White white trim. Make the red glossy. It will really pop and keep things from looking monochromatic.

I think a rich plum or a deep peacock blue would look great.
If you want lighter, I like TwinkleTessa's idea of robins egg blue.

I have similar coloured walls and definately think you are best going with either the same colour for everything, or doing the trim in black.

The doors and door handles need to match, whatever color you decide on. If the doors are painted in the same color and finish as the walls, the mismatch won't be so obvious.

Love the idea of painting everything Black Fox.

Very happy the candle thing's going bye-bye! One hates to criticize someone's choice in chochkas, it really needed to go.

At one point, I had a bathroom vanity with doors that had that traditional paneling/molding stuff going on and no funds for replacement, so I bought a sheet of luan and cut it to fit the doors and epoxied/nailed it on, then painted. Whew! Crisp and clean and ever so much better. That's a possibility for your bifold.

oh, Aulaire, thats a great idea! I don't think I can afford to replace any doors right now, so I think I'll look into that.

so I think I'm going to go with black for the trim and doors (semi-gloss?), and just spraypaint the switchplates black to save some cash.

also, should I put something else in place of the candle thing, or just leave the space empty? I keep thinking I'd like a little table there, but still can't decide on anything.

black.. It matches the step ladder. It would frame out the wall. The wall color will look lighter against the black.
