Good Questions: Combining Smaller Rugs?

9-25-kenga-rug.jpgI like Angela Adams red Kenga wool rug, but I don't love the price tag that comes with it. Compared to many other rugs it's reasonable, but it doesn't fit my budget. The 2x3 red Kenga cotton rug is in my price range, but I really need something 4x6 or 5x8. I was thinking of combining 4 of her kenga cotton rugs together, flor style. Do you think this would work or look strange? I'm worried that the corners may be slightly curved and not fit together properly.

Thanks!

We'd like to point you in the direct of this post from January: How To: Create a Quick, Cheap Rug. This was a successful attempt to combine smaller rugs into a larger one, but Angela Adams rugs are much, much thicker.

Who has suggestions/ideas?

Four of the smaller ones would be cheaper than one of the size you need? Seriously?

I was wondering the same thing, Patrick, so I did the math...and yes, it actually would be cheaper (roughly $840 for one 5x8 vs. $280 for four 2x3 rugs).

That said, I can't imagine that four small rugs put together will have anything close to the effect of one large rug. It will look like four rugs (which is a look, but maybe not the one you're hoping for!) -- yes, you'll see the edges, and the pattern will not match properly.

What if you got one smaller rug and then got the plushest of FLOR tiles at the border?

My in-laws bought us a gorgeous rug in Turkey, but alas it's too small for our living room and doesn't go anywhere else in the house. Our solution was to layer it on a nice jute rug.

We still have to find a nice glass coffee table so as not to obscure our fancy rug, but...the layering works.

I could see putting three rugs together along the long sides, for a 6' x 3' maybe....

....but with four rugs in a four-square arrangement you'll have that huge cross-hairs ditch smack in the middle of it all.

If you do combine rugs, use an odd number, but if I were you I'd just keep shopping for the size you need in a pattern you like. JCPenney is great with rugs, and they often have nice ones in their outlet section of the website.

The problem is that these are bound rugs - becasue of that, it's always going to look like a bunch of little rugs stuck together - carpet tape or not.

Save your money and get the rug you like when you can afford it - or get something in the size you need at a price you can afford via Craigslist or the flea markets.

Thanks so much for the advice! In the end I agree that the four thick rugs patched together might look odd. I ended up purchasing a lovely plush rug remnant in a similar coloration to Kenga at ABC Carpet. So far I'm very happy.
