Good Questions: Combo Trash/Recycling Bin?

4-16-garbage.jpgHello AT,

Where can I find a kitchen combination trash and recycling bin? We've all seen hampers to separate the whites from the colors, but what about a single unit bin to separate trash/bottles and cans/paper? Something aesthetically pleasing would be a plus.

Thanks, Dan

Dear Dan,

The first place we would hit would be the Container Store. We were in there recently and they have beefed up their garbage/recycling section, though it is surprising how few containers do both at once. Most custom kitchens now have undermount containers for a multiple of choices, but the biggies like SimpleHuman, Vipp and Rubbermaid seem to want you to buy two instead of one, which might not be a bad idea.

We recently saw a new design at the Container Store - by a German company - called HERO or something like that, that is very slim and would be nice side by side with another one. Here it is.

We also saw this 2 Bin Recycle Center, which seemed to us the coolest of the lot for a two-in-one.

Anyone else?? How about from some other source??

Not that pretty but we used this thing from the kids dept at Ikea for a long time to separate the bottles and paper and kept twine and bags in the bottom. You can get dif size bins, and in dif colors.

Anne, do you find them big enough to hold your recyclables for more than a day? I have fairly small bins now, and I feel like I'm emptying them almost every day (but I do drink a lot of soda).

They are fairly small, but I live alone and don't drink soda. :) They work for me--if I had a larger bin I'd only be taking my trash out once a week or so, and that's just gross.

We've been using the butterfly recycler from simplehuman -- slim, trim, with two buckets inside. Pricey, and capacity is somewhat limited (we empty once a week for the two of us, and store our paper recyclables elsewhere) but it's working well for separating our glass / plastic / metal from our trash.

What about the ecopod sold at Wm Sonoma? - it's pretty pricing in my book but not a bad design for recyclables.

Not Hiro, it's Hailo. Same bin is sold on overstock.com. (cheaper!)
It has mixed reviews. But I use for recycle in my kitchen and love it.

A couple of years ago I got one at Container Store, German brand Leifheit, plain low plastic rectangle with internal holders for two garbage bags (grocery store bags work fine). It was the only two-in-one kitchen garbage can I could find and it works well. If you can still get one, I recommend it.
