Good Questions: Contemporary Rug Recommendation?

12-13-dolma.jpgHello AT,

I am looking for a 9x12 ft (approx.) contemporary area rug in shades of steel grey (dark grey or light black)- possibly a Tibetan. So far all I've come up with are made-to-order carpets which are pricey and unpredictable.

Any suggestions? Thanks, Marianne

Dear Marianne,

You want to look at a rug before you buy it, so if you are in NYC, here's the three stores we would look at:
Dolma: on Lafayette Street is the best for the price point. The pic above is from Dolma.
Teh Bubbles Rug: We love this simple rug from C&B, but it's only an 8x10
Room & Board: has a wide selection of good, contemporary patterns.
Tibet Carpet: is just down the street from us and looks like it has nice patterns and NOT designer prices. Worth a look.

Try Red Thread or one of its dealers: http://redthread.com/home.html .

They're American's from Seattle over in Kathmandu with a wholistic biz model and some nice designs.

How about Khaden Rugs? I have no idea about their price point.

New Moon Carpets is also cool but pricey:

Have you tried Storehouse?

The Rug Company ... try it ... www.therugcompany.info ... stores in London, Los Angeles, and New York ... seriously sassy stuff, and damned elegant, too ... readymade and custom available ... what is your price preference? you need to state that ... I'll check back and do some research ...

Another idea: check out rugs by Liora Manné Collection at transocean.com ... emmagardnerdesign.com may have something you like, too ... and also suyrarugs.com, whose Mughal Collection might do the trick (a couple of rugs seem right in terms of color tone) ...

Marianne--Don't know if it's still going on, but the ABC Brooklyn warehouse, which is closing, had a lot of rugs, many contemporary...The prices were somewhat negotiable when I was there.

I have a Khaden rug... and it is beautiful and contemporary.
They are very high quality.
They have some in warehouse that might be on clearance. call and check it out.
