Good Questions: Cool Shelving Storage?

2004_7_question mark.jpgHey AT,

In light of your post today [Oct 7th] of 7$ metal magazine racks worth putting in plain sight, I was wondering if you could share with us some other options of nice looking boxes and containers worth filling with stuff and displaying on your shelves with pride.

I have a shoebox full of DVD tapes, a bunch of extra toiletries in a Amazon box and various other things in various other hideous containers. I woudl love to find a set of cheap matching boxes with some class and durability to line up on those shelves.

Thanks, Tom

We admit to being lazy here and always falling back on an old favorite, the Recycled Fiberboard boxes, that we find at The Container Store for @ $8-15 each. These metal gym baskets are also cool. We also like the Ikea boxes, which are wood. Also, Martha has an upmarket box that is now on sale, and her metal stackable storage bins which are cheaper (and just like Ikea's). (Thanks, Tom!) MGR

I've taken the wood drawers from Ikea (the ones that come in sets of two; the link isn't working here), turned the drawers themselves around, painted them black, attached little silver pulls (also from Ikea), and stacked them in various configurations. I use them for office supplies, hardware like nails and things, sewing supplies, DVDs, CDs, and toiletries -- I love them.

Oops, they're called the MACKIS mini chest of drawers/CD storage.

Does anyone know if those court transcript boxes, posted on Craig's are still for sale? I meant to buy some . . . but now the Craig's post is gone.

Sam Flax has great boxes, similar to the recycled fiberboard ones, but they're a little funkier, with brighter colors (cobalt, orange, etc.) and black rubber rings surrounding the finger pulls. I've had some for 4+ years and they're holding up just fine.

Any suggestions for nice-looking CD/DVD books?

The ones I have are sturdy black and purple nylon-ish, but I'd prefer something a bit more natural and neutral.

Chris -- I tried to buy some of those court transcript boxes from CL, but when I asked to buy 6 or so all of one color, the guy refused to sell them to me! He said he'd only sell mixed sets "in case" other people wanted some. Interesting sales strategy - pass up a sure deal, just in case another buyer comes along . . .
