Good Questions: Cool Toothbrushes?

12-14-toothbrush.jpgHello AT,

Do you all know where I can find a pretty toothbrush? Sounds kind of silly until you start looking for one... they're nearly all neon and bulbous and covered with some superhero or another. I found some nice ones at Almandersalley.com, but would really like to find more.

If you can answer this, thanks very much! Thanks, Janet

Dear Janet,

We TOTALLY agree with you. If ever there was a design monopoly to be busted up, it is the one made up of Oral-B, Colgate and REACH.

For us minimalists, we prefer the Preserve Toothbrushes, which are very nice and recycled. However, for a fancier brush we have long ogled the thick square handled ones with the pure bristles that we have seen in Bigelow Pharmacy on 6th Avenue. Anyone Else???

Try Bigelow's in the West Village too.

I'm really fond of kids' toothbrushes for that reason... that, and that maneuver around my molars more easily!

I will now publicly confess to sometimes using a Hello Kitty toothbrush.

I'm, also a big fan of the Radius toothbrush. I love the huge head on it. And I'm left-handed, and really like having toothbrush that fits my hand just right.

I'm not a big fan of normal-size toothbrushes. Click my name for a Radius link.

The Terence Conran Shop used to carry some designer dental doodads.

But consider going electric if at all possible. My check-ups improved IMMENSELY just by switching to electric!

Anne I--
You have given me some GREAT material via your post for entendre, double and otherwise...

But I will be kind since it is the holidays. And we like you. :)

Seems like I saw some pretty toothbrushes just the other day, but I may need false memory therapy to remember.

Agree (again!) with p(too) on this. Go electric, esp Sonicare. Less cleaning time in the dentist chair... But if you have to kick it old school, check out the cool selection from Paul Smith. I have an orange one--purely for display purposes. But it looks like orange is not currently being offered. http://www.paulsmith.co.uk/shop/other-gifts/toothbrush-cona-toot-hbr/

One of the many reasons we love Enrique: "the decorative toothbrush." :)

And hey, is Phillipe Starck still doing toothbrushes for Target?

P(too)... that was my Christmas gift to you. :)

Enrique: I wish the Paul Smith brushes came in his Swirl pattern. Alas. I do dig the green, though.

And I forgot to insert my Radius toothbrush link in my earlier post! So, okay, NOW click my name and it will take you to a land of Radial Goodness and Light.

Oh, and P(too) - I'm glad you like electric toothbrushes, but I would never stick something that vibrates in my mouth.

- insert rimshot here -

and yet we STILL like you. ;)

I love the Radius brushes, except they don't fit in the little built-in toothbrush holder in my bathroom. So I put them in a jar on the side of the sink, which I regularly nearly knock onto the floor. But what should I do with that built-in ceramic toothbrush holder - the kind with a spot for a glass in the center and four small holes around the edges?

Toothbrush storage ideas?

I just saw some lovely patternede toothbrushes at Anthropologie yesterday. But I agree with Enrique--the Sonicare rocks! I just went to the dentist and had the best checkup and shortest cleaning ever, thanks to my trusty (but not so cute) Sonicare.

Hahaha... The Paul Smith toothbrush was a housewarming gift; So it had to go on display! Plus it's "designer".

No more Starck electric toothbrushes at Target. I test-drove one. Nice design, but terrible at cleaning.

Sonicare = fugly, but super-effective. My dream dental hygiene product? A Sonicare designed by Marc Newsom.

My dream dental hygiene product?

Chris Meloni as Dental Hygienist.

Until then, yeah, where are all the swank electric toothbrushes? Went shopping for a replacement this weekend, and they are all very dental lab-like.

Costco is selling a three pack of pulsing toothbrushes - I can't recall if it is colgate or
one of the other biggies...but they are really
cool. Each one is a different color and my son said he brushes longer. It's not beautiful but
it is neat and inexpensive.

P(too)...that's my dream dental hygene product, too :)

I have been contemplating an electric one...but the cheapskate in me just goes for the cheapest ones I can buy.

Anne the first - I, too, am left handed and always seem uncomfortable with the toothbrushes on the market. I don't know if anyone here has the same "problem" but everytime I change to a new toothbrush I feel like I have to acclamate myself all over again to this strange tool. Some I never get used to. I guess I should try the kid's brushes.

Speaking of Conran's - remember when they used to be in the Citicorp bldg. and other spots around town? I loved it then. Everything was so cool AND so affordable. Now it's too cool and NOT affordable. I miss the old Conran's!

I just went through this search myself a few weeks ago and went with the Preserve mentioned above. It is recycled and recyclable, inexpensive, simple, and well designed. I got mine at whole foods. I love it.

If memory serves, Waterworks stores carry lovely toothbrushes. They have the pretty, resin pattern types and also have imported (mostly Italian, I think) toothpaste.

Went Christmas shopping last night at Restoration Hardware. (Everyone in my family is getting Turkish cotton towels. Shhh...) And was that they had a selection of really great-looking toothbrushes! All were clear lucite with various semi-opaque, simple geometric patterns. Really good! Nicely proportioned, generous density of bristles. And tasteful in that "brand-new retro" look that RH does so well. Unfortunately, no pics on their website.
